We took a look at some CD and cassette players from companies like Fiio and We are Rewind, but quickly found that they are not as advanced as some of their vintage counterparts.

So what you're saying is, quite literally "they do not make them like they used to"

Back in 1992 I had a gold Sony Walkman that was just slightly bigger than the cassette. It took one AA battery. It was a thing of beauty.

Because those companies are basically just drop shipping nostalgia. They’re not investing into rebuilding the best mechanics.

Mat on the Techmoan YouTube channel already covered this subject with the same conclusions about a year ago.

More advanced players could certainly be built but there isn’t enough demand to support it.
If you want to be a hipster listen on vinyl, we’re making great record players now

84-85 My friend brought a cassette Walkman home from Japan.

Wow, Best gear id ever seen. Compact, Metal, very precise and durable.
Sounded great.

The iriver SlimX you showed was my very last CD-based mp3 player before I went to HDD-based (aka ipod/creative jukebox, etc) rig.

I looooved carrying that thing around in highschool. So sleek and slim, plus I flashed the firmware to use the backlit LCD remote to play games like Snake on too. Along with my burnt CD’s that held hundreds of MP3’s. That CD player was an absolute masterpiece.

Ran a couple minidisc players too back then, but that iRiver was just beyond cool and useful for high-capacity, no-skip music playing.

I miss my portable mini disc player/recorder with an inline remote and display. Consumer electronics were so much cooler back then.

I have a new CD player and they now have bluetooth, and spin a short time and store the song and play from memory. More advanced.

This is where they could do the R&D to redesign a compact mechanism, but of course these aren’t products designed to do their job “well.” They are designed to satisfy what is now a niche market of people drowning in nostalgia while cheaply providing maximum revenue potential.

Hmm a pro analog headset from the 80s would sound really good with those tapes

Omg... my dad had that blue panasonic discman.... makes me sad. My dad was obsessed with music and had a lot of knowledge. He passed his passion down to me. Rip dad.

So hard to find a good buggy whip these days.

Welp, good news is that there may be schematics for 90’s CD players which leads to manufacturing jobs if people are really ready for CD and Tape players to come back.

General designed parts and Proprietary designed Parts are different things. Thats Y older version of cassette/Disc players are very portable.

There used to be *FIERCE* competition for these things back then.
So these things went through extensive design process.
Now, not so much..

If there is no Walkman, there will be no IPod, without iPod there will be no iPhone

They still sell plenty of CD players that are compact, you literally pick the biggest bulkiest ones you could find to try to make this point. I literally saw a CD player that looks almost identical to the "Compact" one at Staples for like 19 bucks

I don’t need compactness for old formats anymore, I’d rather it work flawlessly
