classic books to read that you can *actually* enjoy

Classic literature can be boring but Franz Kafka's work is otherworldly. I would recommend The Trial, The Castle and Amerika. The Metamorphosis is not one of my favorites. But have you read any of his work? Or do you have any other classic books to read?

Just finished reading Metamorphosis and now I’m finding myself in a state of sadness and emptiness.
I’m reflecting on the meaning of my futile existence.
It’s like a dream that keeps replaying in my head.

1984 and Animal Farm by George Orwell are really good too. They’re not emotionally but the writing is so crisp you can actually picture the situation and it will definitely, most definitely get you thinking

Well I've read The Trial about a year ago, and I just started the Castle. Kafka has such an odd style, who can possibly make a nightmare readable? Lol

Seriously though, i read metamorphosis, the trial and the castle and after finished each one of them. I felt like i just woke up from a lucit dream at sunset, sweating, eyes half closed and said what the hell just happen.

I found dry humour in kafka's works, had me giggling for 10 mins straight.

Huge fan of satire. Makes you laugh at the absurdity of life. Many have mentioned Brave New World. I also recommend Candide by Voltaire.

The trial is great and so is the castle but metamorphosis is well know and well received for a reason, absolutely fantastic

I’ve only read The Metamorphosis so far, but I really do appreciate his writing style, and to know his books are typically a bit “dreamy” makes me excited to read The Trial soon !!:3

Another fantastic Kafka book to check out: “A Hunger Artist”!

It talks about a performer whose act is to fast/not eat. He extends his fast longer and longer to get bigger crowds. Eventually, the crowds grow bored of his act. But he is so caught up in his act that he is committed and continues. It escalates even further, but you’ve gotta read it to find out!

There are all kinds of classic books that are great? Brave New World, 1984, Big Sur, Songs of a Distant Earth

Kafka rules. But what other classic books do you, or people, find "boring" or "not enjoyable"? Because I cannot think of any.

Are you serious? Kafka is incredible and a milestone, but his books are some of the most unpleasant in classical literature.
For enjoyment I would recommend Dostoyevsky's "The Idiot", George Sand and Brothers Grimm's Fairy Tales.
