Is it Worth Collecting the Sega Dreamcast In 2023?

Should you go out and buy a Dreamcast? Or is it a waste of money? Let's talk pros and cons of collecting for the Dreamcast.

For a quick history, the Dreamcast was released in the US on 9/9/99, nearly a year after the japan release. The Dreamcast runs a custom version of windows in an attempt to draw PC ports to the console. It sold 9.13 million units worldwide before being discontinued in March of 2001. This was Sega last console before switching to a 3rd party development model.

So after a shorter lifespan than the Wii U, the library is small. If you wanted to go for a complete console, it's one of the smaller library's to collect. Unique games like jet Grind Radio and Sonic Adventure started on the Dreamcast.

So with a heavy price tag on unique items, is there a cheaper side to collecting on the Dreamcast?

The only thing about the games being expensive thing is that you can just burn the Dreamcast games. So really you’re just paying for the blank disc.

Believe it or not the time to collect Dreamcast is now and I say that only because prices on games will only continue to go up from here over time and you will see some title hit $1000+ in the future if your collecting. The time to have seen $50 for a Mars Matrix, $35 for a Sonic Adventure 2, $50 for a Giga Wing 2, $45 for Cannon Spike was about 10 to 15 years ago and sadly those days are long gone…..

Getting a Dreamcast+a stack of CDRs(Yes!). Collecting its games? Probably not due to cost and availability.

In Germany you can get Sonic Adventure 2 in Box with great condition for 15€

Um, most games on ALL old consoles can be played elswhere though.. availability is not why people collect.
Peeps dont pay thousands for a little samson because you need an nes cartridge to play it

Hi, I understand that yes the gamecube is a great console, but here’s the thing for the argument of the dc, the games that were ported to go, ps2 from dc at the time were not as good as the original ones made for the dc, because them games were made with the dc in mind from the ground up, also even though there expensive, there’s a lot of third party exclusive games that ya can’t get anywhere else or made with the dc in mind and ports made later for gamecube or ps2, weren’t as good or played as good as the dc originals!also if you get a gekko or akura from beharbro, 480p straight outta the dc for 90% of its games and last time I looked for the gamecube the adapter for it is well over hundred pounds or dollars where your from, I’m from uk by the way, and for a gekko or akura, your talking Between 50 and 70 pounds/dollars, so don’t say a console ain’t worth collecting for if ya ain’t done ya homework on everything to with the console ya being biased against collecting for, laters!

What a strange video 🤔 You pick out 3 games that were ported to other consoles, compare that prices and come to the conclusion dreamcast is not worth collecting ? I would suggest you have a look at the whole dreamcast library and you will see that there are several great games that were never ported. Btw. is that an argument for or against collecting ? If so, why should anybody collect for an 8 Bit system because most of the games were ported or rereleased ?!?! Plus many of the most interesting dreamcast games were aftermarket. At least you mentioned, that there are new products for that system until today ! I´m sorry, but I don´t understand your criterias of collecting...
