DM: So, what's your warlock's vessel?
Player: The ring of three wishes!
DM: No.
Player: But it says here RAW-
DM: *NO*

DM: So, what's your warlock's vessel?
Player: The ring of three wishes!
DM: sure
Player: I use the ring to...
DM: nothing happens
Player: why?
DM: the ring has no charges left

This so feels like snark aimed at certain youtubers with their “OP combos.”

This seems like a speed run to a dead character.
Genie lock: “I wish I was more charismatic.”
DM: “Granted, you transform permanently into a dog. Roll up a new character.”

It would be really funny if the Ring was emptied of all wishes, but the latent power inside it is what grants you the genie warlock powers.

Grant the ring, but all charges are spent.

If we break the game we can just give a goodberry and make all better again: )

As a DM tbh i'd probably allow this, though obviously there would be some restrictions or caveat like the ring has already been used or the patron lost its full power and you are helping to restore it. but thematically this actually fits 100% so it be a real cool story mechanic. i like to favor the "YES, But ..." over the full flat out "NO" when DMining. but i also can see why some DM's wouldn't let this fly and thats okay too.

Personally, I like the concept of a Marid Genie Warlock whose vessel is an old 'message in a bottle' carried on a rope woven shoulder sling.

This is the 5e equivalent of summoning Pazuzu in 3.5

I actually did this, but my character used the three wishes in the background story, so it was a non-issue xD

If DM doesn't allow it then instead you can pick Sphere of Annihilation

I'd let my player have it, it would teach them the most fundamental rule of d&d: *There's no such thing as a free lunch.*

Magic items are actually distinct from regular objects. Or anyway, I seem to remember that you cannot use the "use an object" action to activate magic items, and that thief players got quite upset over that when the developers clarified it. It would follow that if a magic item is _not_ simply an object, you can't choose a magic item as the object for your genie's vessel.

Using a discharged ring of free wishes as Your "lamp" might actually be a great idea for roleplay

Similarly, the description of the Dragon-Touched Focus magic item states:

"This wondrous item can be a scepter, an orb, an amulet, a crystal, *or another finely crafted object."*

A weapon is an object. You could have a rapier as a Dragon-Touched Focus--great for Bladesinging Wizards!

DM allows it, but then the patron genie comes out of the object and says you’re not allowed to use the ring’s wishes or the genie will force you to spend an eternity trapped in the ring.

You lost me at the joke and got me again at the "ok bye bye" so lovable

I like the idea of a genie warlock as a thief.
Sneak into a place, bag up all your loot, pop into your vessel with the loot while having a familiar carry the vessel back out to safety.
At a later date, if you get stopped, you obviously won't have any of the loot, because its stored inside your vessel, until you decide to extract it.

Damn... 🤔 DM Counter: "The Ring is empty of wishes (or maybe 1)" 🤣
