ENGLISH LESSON SUMMARY:
Are you getting enough repetition? Are you getting the right type of repetition?
Repetition is key to being able to use English accurately and fluently. But repeating single words won't help. It's vital that you learn sentences; this is how you’re going to internalize grammar. When you learn sentences:
- you store sentences in your brain
- you can use chunks (parts) of the sentences you have learned to create new sentences
- this is where using correct English will feel right to you
Getting lots of input (reading and listening) is going to help you store sentences. But there is another way to help you do this more efficiently.
It works like this:
- You take sentences relevant to you
- Make digital flashcards
- Repeat them efficiently
Repetition is key - but you don’t want to repeat something too much. You want to do this in the most effective way.
Before we talk about how to do this, let’s look at these three sentences:
👉 I’m not excited about going to the party
👉 He was excited about seeing her
👉 Do you think you’re going to be excited about it later?
Let’s say you store these three sentences through repetition. By using "chunks" you'll be able to say:
👉 I wasn’t excited about going to see her
👉 Do you think he's excited about going to the party?
Can you see how we can use chunks of sentences and use them In our own way?
This is the power of learning through sentences, collocations, and phrases.
Here’s the thing:
If you do this for, let’s say 1,000 sentences, and you are smart about the sentences you choose, you will be able to produce sentences in English effortlessly, without thinking about the rules, and without making mistakes.
And to make this more powerful, we can use flashcards to get the repetition we need.
I recommend using Anki so that you don't need to think about when you need to review a sentence. The software does this for you. Here are three tips when using this method:
1. Do one of 3 things when reviewing sentences: (read, read it out loud, write it down)
2. Include audio phrases (if possible)
3. Be consistent with it - just 5-15 minutes per day (go slowly at first)
