I think this is a bit of a reach he was unstoppable for two years straight, literally was the only one to force Armada to switch mains to combat Jiggs, and then ON TOP of being a full time content creator while hosting online tournaments and being a competitor for two SMASH games he still remains a top 5 threat and no matter who he plays there is always that aura that he can clutch it back and win it all. So, sure, he looks the same but it has worked... the only difference now is that his energy is not 100% committed to Melee...and THAT...will always take a toll on a top player's performance.

Mango didn't even answer the question, let's not forget that out of the 5 gods, Hbox is the only solo main character in a cast of top tiers that super counter play Jiggs, so I think to say he hasn't brought any "innovation" to the character is completely dismissive about what Hbox has done with Puff, if he's been successful without all this tech in his prime then did Hbox/Puff really need it? And to use today as an example as to why he's not performing by just analyzing his gameplay in a vacuum and not taking all the other background stuff of his life into account completely makes his argument null and void.


Hbox is absolutely in the convo for being the GOAT, and don't ever forget it.

Mang0 is literally a puff fan and people need to remember that . He's probably the MOST critical of puff players . He played puff at the top level And was inspired by a very different style of puff. Hbox has obviously innovated a gargantuan amount of the puff meta.

Did Hbox take this comment to heart?... Just watched him play vs M2K a couple months ago and his Puff actually looked pretty insane, and not like just a 1-trick pony regarding the bair

I remember when the Mang0 stans kept yelling that HBox was going to kill competitive Melee and that Puff was bad for the game. That the red wave of puff was going to dominate top 8s and it would be dittos for days and they would stop watching. It's been almost 5 years and there's still only one puff doing it.

I've never been a Mang0 fan mainly because the only thing consistent is the shit he talks. He's got skills, but it's one of those "never count Mang0 out" things instead of "You can definitely count on Mango0." Whatever flaw you want to point out in HBox, he has been a more consistent melee presence than any of the old gods followed by Armada. And while he was the most criticized, his career has aged the best.

HBox used to have to win in order to be recognized at all. Every time he lost the community cheered. Now he's more endemic and it's the perfect balance for him as a player.

im not skilled enough to explain why hbox's gameplay is good, however it seems safe to say that was makes hbox so strong, is his intense grit and mental. His ability to try and make his oppenents play scared and jump on that. Which these days gets you to top 10 level, but to break into that top 5 (let alone #1), the field has equal if not better grit and patience, and way more tech skill and practice. Whats wild is with hbox even SOMETIMES using RTC rest, it lets him beat his demons like cody. Imagining a world where hbox punishes a marth dashgrab with a reaction-wavedash-in-rest, and RTC rest every up throw onto a platform, is a world no one is ready for. Tho its probably not a world thatll ever happen. Clutchgod has no reason to strive to be #1 anymore. He makes a great living thru his various content stuff, has become a beloved (for the most part) community leader in the smash scene as a whole, and the largest online TO in all of smash. I dont blame him with being happy hes even making top 8s, good for him
