Is there ACTUALLY an Accidental 'Se' in Spanish?

I learned (learning) “se” in six use cases, with the “accidental” being one of them. The idea that the “blame” (for burning, breaking, running out of, getting dirty, falling) passes from the person (who manifests only as a pronoun victim) to the thing involved is a way to get your head around the use. And to remember /group the verbs that act this way. I remember watching a video and the guy is talking about some extraordinary ice cream. He goes to taste it and he drops the ice cream off his cone. And he says immediately “se me cayó” with a stricken expression on his face. It was not just an accident. He was victimized by that ice cream! I loved your video explaining that really it is the underlying pronominal verb driving this not a different se construction.

I like this type of video. Understanding the "why" helps me to remember the rules and patterns of pretty much anything. This was a great break-down and was easy for me to understand.

This is excellent Andrew! I had for some time been wondering why, in these phrases, the focus was on the "se" when it seemed to me that what was changing, was the use of the personal pronouns. My daughter's university professor (native Spaniard) told her class...this is hard to explain. My daughter said, "my mom taught us it is a way of passing responsibility off, so you are not to blame...you had no intention of the event happening". His response. "That's it! I have to use that".

I very much enjoy videos like this. Thank you for making it. I learned Spanish a very long time ago, and nobody was using the term "accidental se". But I learned this construction as just a set way to say certain things in Spanish.

One of the translations you mentioned for I forgot the bread was "Me olvidé del pan". For this sentence, why is del used and not el?

I am a detail person and find it easier and more enjoyable to learn if I understand the details. Though, I have to say that it has not been an easy road for me and I am not yet fluent. So, maybe your way of skimming could be better.

Still, it’s been a long time since I have studied Spanish in detail, and this was a very good refresher on “se”. I have not watched the other video, yet, and I may have been wondering about this. 😂 I appreciate it.
