CINCINNATI (WKRC) - Hamilton County Public Health has taken hundreds of complaints from people about businesses not following safety guidelines. The daily calls are down to about 15 a day.

Interim Health Commissioner Greg Kesterman says employees not wearing a mask is one of the most common complaints.

"Somebody will drive through a drive-thru and none of the workers have a mask on or the second most common complaint is social distancing," Kesterman said.

Retail stores and fast-food restaurants are the businesses receiving the most complaints.

"I see folks being upset about social distancing from a perspective of [waiting in] line to get their food or waiting to be served at a business as well as individuals being concerned with employees social distancing, two workers standing side-by-side without masks on," Kesterman said.

The department still receives complaints about manufacturing and office-type places, but those have dropped significantly.

Kesterman says the department doesn't have the staff to proactively monitor all the businesses. So, it's important you let them know about any unsafe businesses.

"If you feel uncomfortable when you enter a business, I think the number one thing you can do is leave that business. Feel free to let the business know why and so the businesses can begin to make changes in their operations to make us all safe when we go there," Kesterman said.

When a call comes in, the health department will reach out to the business and go over what it needs to do. If someone spots a second or third complaint, an inspector will go out and could issue a notice of violation.

If a business still doesn't comply, the health inspector could refer it to the prosecutor's office for potential charges.
