That gets you to zero but you still have to paint check a few times

I'd say it's a necessary tool if your main line of work is driveline/differential related. I've rebuilt quite a few differentials in my career and never needed this tool. They ran fine, no unusual noise, never came back with any issues. I could see owning one if you're consistently doing rear diffs from scratch, particularly in performance applications, but for the average day to day repair tech, there's no way this tool would be considered a "necessity". That kind of money could be put towards tools you'd be using on a daily basis.

That kit as of 2019 is over $800, however the aluminum pucks work good for a home made True-Bar, just buy some 1 inch solid ground stainless steel bar, about 7 feet long and you are in business. now you can check for bent housings and straighten them your self using a Porta-power and some hi-test 3/8" chain.

Great vid as usual! Maybe one day I'll be at the level where I can properly use a tool like this, but until then I'll pay someone else do it for me haha

You guys using machinists tools sure have some funny names for things. That finger thingy is called a dial indicator extension.

Can you do a video of how to check pinion depth using the $99.00 tool. I can't afford to spend $600.00 for a tool I may only once in my life. Thanks

The previous owner of my 2001 Ford Explorer Sport obviously had the rear differential apart. There wasn't any shim under the bearing closest to the pinion gear. In the new pinion gear. There is no marking on the new pinion gear indicating what the pinion gear should be set at? I eyeballed the contact pattern and decided to use a .042" thickness shim. Is there an average shim thickness on this 8.8 differential pinion shaft?
Re: The special tool. Why spend the money. Make your own tool with 3/4 inch square tube. Place the square tube on the machined flats of the gear cage mounting brackets.. Use a caliper to measure the depth from the square tube. Subtract the thickness of the tube to get the distance from gear carrier center to pinion gear. That's the DIY way I did. Cheap and functionL.

Really enjoy your videos. I have an 8.8 pinion bearing with the inner race honed. It's now easy to adjust the shims without having to press the bearing on and off. What is the intro music used on all your episodes?

Can I just measure with a depth mic from cap surface, minus half bearing diameter to face of pinyon? Yes there’ll often times be up to a 4-5 thou difference between carrier half and bearing cap, just adjust for the difference

Even with that kit you can't get it spot on first time it gets close but you still have to reshim
