USC's Biggest Question On Offense

There aren't too many questions left for Caleb Williams to think about when he's leading the team down the field. However, there will be a game when he needs to know his "go-to wr" will be able to make a play. Without the famous "4th & 9" pass from Matt Leinart to Dwayne Jarrett, the Bush Push never happens. Who will be Caleb Williams's "go-to wr" in 2023?

Scoring more points than the opponent is still the best way to win a game. The defense wins championships still holds true, however, much lesser to an extent than it used to be. USC with Lincoln Riley, Caleb Williams, and the offense they'll lead are second to no one, so what type of team will it take to beat USC? And is that type of team already on the schedule, or will they have to wait until the playoffs?

Miller Moss or Malachi Nelson will be the starter for the Trojans, next season. Moss is the clear No. 2 QB heading into this season, and he should be ahead of the talented freshman, Nelson. Winning this season is the first priority for Coach Riley to focus on, however, the head coach also needs to make sure he's finding enough playing time for Moss this season. How much time should Riley try and use to continue the team's development?

Riley offense doesn’t need a number one receiver, it’s strength is in its numbers. Variety of talented targets makes it hard to prepare for

They have so many alpha's at Wide receiver. I don't think one needs to be a true #1. In the NFL that's a must. But in college similar to the NFL, but they aren't pro's its all about match ups. Brendan, Dorian, Mario, Tahj, Branch, and don't sleep on Michael J III, he had some nice plays last year!!

Ja'Kobi Lane has a special skill set. He's tall and can high point a ball and make the difficult 1-handed catch. As a WR he has elite ball skills which makes him one of those players who can win the 50/50 at a high rate. Despite all this natural physical ability. Its what's between his ears that makes him special. He's got a little "Moxie" to him. His confidence is through the roof. Very unsusual for a TF to come in with this kinda swagger. He has a very "Mamba" Kobe like twist to his personality. He's out to prove he is the man. The player he reminds me of is former Georgia WR and current Longhorn Adonai "AD" Mitchell who's also 6'4" 196 lbs. Coincidentally in AD's first spring. He was the talk of camp just like Lane and he rode that momentum into the season. What catch is he known for? The 1 one handed difficult TD catch in their 1st NC game. He made a similar catch in the second NC game.

I think last year Tahj was the safety blanket. He made some insane grabs (but also dropped some easy ones, not as many as Brenden though). Seems like Tahj always stays active and tries hard, traits that would endear himself to any QB.

You're making me feel OLD Marc! There's two questions, who would it be right now and then who would you want it to be come ND or Bowl game time?

I've heard all the National smack about Grinch and USC's defense with predictions of 10-2 or 9-3 bla bla bla. I'm with Marc . It's gonna be 12-0. Here's why.
1. USC improved on defense, personnel wise a min of +14. The 8 defensive (starter talent) transfers and 6 surprise ( Super 6) Freshman. Solomon Byrd's emergence, Romello Height return and Domani Jackson being healthy make it a +17 at min.
2. USC lost 3 games last season. Two by (1) point with last years defense that IMHO was not even 1 deep at a few positions. They are a legit 3 deep now. Those scores were:
Utah 42-43 L
Utah 24-47
Tulane 45-46 L
Two losses by a combined 2 pts.
3. The areas they improved on defense are Middle DLine, Outside Rush, DE, and Middle LB. They should be able to contain the run and get pressure from the outside more consistently.
4. This is key: Riley averages 11 wins a season and this could be his best overall roster. So how do you justify 9 or 10 wins? 12 wins is just 1 more than his average. So 12-0.

Clancy Pendergast or Todd Orlando could lead this roster to a top 20 defense, baring major injuries to key guys like Bear Alexander or Kyon Barrs. Now, in regards to Grinch. I don't believe he will factor into this either way. This roster, at worst, is Grinch proof. So you can all relax about that. There is too much individual talent here to fail. Now, if he does put it together, there is a potential for a top 10 defense, and that would be a feather in his cap. I look for USC to have a 2022 Illinois type defensive turnaround on the strength of their roster. They went from # 29 in 2021 to #1 in 2022.

Trick question. He runs 90% of the time in 2022. In 2023 he needs to run less as he must stay in the game. Go through your progressions Or throw it away.
No more ND or UCLA highlights .

Caleb should only see the field for first halves of first 6 games. Moss should play the second halves of the 6 with Jensen and the kid seeing action in 3 of those games.

Cal game should again retire Williams at end of first half. Moss third Q, Jensen and the kid who should be making his 3rd appearance finishing up.

If Williams has to perform beyond first half in those 7 games, WE ARE IN TROUBLE!
It would have meant the Defense and Running game sputtered.
