John Daly does the unthinkable at Baltusrol at the 1993 U.S. Open by getting on the green on the 630 yard par 5 17th hole in 2 strokes. Long John remains the only player to ever do so.

Anyone who didn't play with 1993 equipment is completely unaware how impressive this is.

The 1 iron swing was the most impressive. That's an incredibly hard golf club to use and he torched that ball with it.

Saw him on the narrow 350yd 10th at Royal Lytham in an Open practice round. When he took out an iron, the crowd booed and demanded he took a driver. He acquiesced and promptly landed it on the green.

Bear in mind this was with a 1993 driver that was about 200cc. And then a 1 iron off the deck.
Outstanding.

Daly hit Driver, 1-iron to the green by the way. Funny story when Daly had his club deal through Wilson, they actually made him a 0-iron.

That buttery smooth second swing and step-follow through looked effortless. When JD won the '91 PGA he forever solidified his spot as my all time #1 favorite golfer. Hoping the best for ya my man!

To think the amount of talent one needs, to be able to play on the PGA Tour without really putting in hours upon hours of practice every day... That is really telling. If John would have had Tiger, Vijay or Phil's work ethics I see him easily winning 20 PGA tour event more and probably a handful of majors... He was really a phenom!

I was along the fairway when he hit the second shot. My friend and I followed Daly around for his Friday round. We kept track of him and about 20 minutes before we figured he was headed to tee up, we got the the 17th tee box and it was 20 deep already. My friend said “we want to see the second shot!” We headed down the fairway which was kind of empty. We wandered down and a guy with a yardage book said to us “this is about 300 yards”. We stood next to each other when the first 2 tee shots landed well short of us. Then Dalys shot roll past another 20 yards. THATS when the crowd arrived, like a tsunami. He was smoking like a chimney. Put his butt down and hit that shot pure. We all waited unit the crowd in the stands green side erupted.

Word was he drove through the green Thursday. Epic talent and coolest guy to walk the fairway.

JD is the coolest, saw him play a skills competition, he was mathematically out of the competition, he is doing a bump and run from about 3 feet off the green. Takes a sand wedge with a full swing, launches the ball about 60 feet in the air, ended up about a foot from the cup. .

been fortunate enough to play both the upper and lower at baltusrol each once. hit a driver, 3-wood, 3-wood, 9-iron to reach this green in was extremely happy to accomplish that (at the time i played it was 606 yards). can't begin to say how impressive it is to hit 630 yards in 1993.

So naturally comfortable over the ball. Addresses it and hits it so quickly.

I watched Big John (v.friendly) in 93, in a practice round at Wentworth. He was easily pitching past Langer's finished drives. But besides his length, it was how quickly he was playing.- I could barely keep up and all I was doing was walking. The last drive I saw him hit was 320 into a breeze at the 17th, and the light + temp was dropping as well. I stopped for a breather.

observation: The amount of alcohol he drank later was just as impressive.

I remember watching him drive the 18th at St Andrews. I know plenty of other golfers have done that, but his drive flew through the green, hit the bank at the back, kicked up & hit the spectator grandstand then bounced back onto the green. Not seen another golfer do that.

Also fan favorite that takes the time to show the fans some personal attention.

The voice of Jim McKay. One of those all time great sports announcers.

I was standing there watching this in 1993. I ran up to the green, after I saw where he had hit his drive.

I remember seeing this, and then reading it in Golf Digest. He hit a 305-yard 1 iron to reach!
