The covid-19 pandemic may have derailed the world in 2020, but a far deadlier disease has shaped human history for thousands of years. Malaria defeated armies, fuelled the slave trade and jump-started the modern environmental movement.

The "Mosquito Effect" makes the "Butterfly Effect" seem like child's play.

This is so interesting. The sound effects of the mosquito in the background has me paranoid and twitchy though.

I spent time in Africa and had malaria twice. While it's treatable and even preventable, it's not at all fun to have.

Being a so called “Mozungo” in Uganda during my year abroad there, malaria pills were my daily routine for months. I felt awful that my homestay family’s newborn baby got malaria ... twice!!.. during my time there. When I would offer my pills they would tell me that for them it was like catching the flu, and no to worry. Of course I would lie awake worried. In fact I still worry about them all the time. I hope this wretched epidemic is wiped off the face of the earth. And lil Amos has a long and healthy life.

This was absolutely fascinating. I had absolutely no idea about most of this stuff. Thanks a lot!

in Italy it was a big problem until the 1930s when Mussolini made various plans to eradicate it, such as clean up swamps, build dams and introduce some species of fish

I'm surprised they did not mention Sickle cell trait, which is a genetic response to malaria.

The cost of eradicating malaria is a rounding error of the US defense budget. Gut military spending and fix real problems!

I hope so much the world will put enough effort in the research to end this issue. My best friend's sister passed away because of it. She was 30:(...

Malaria is horrible! I contracted malaria in West Papua. Most of my Papuan friends are immune--this lady in an organisation I visited said she was having malaria, she said it was like a light flu. She kept working in the office while eating soups. Two weeks later I caught malaria--not a light flu! Debilitating fever, fainted, trouble breathing, bone pains, bitter sweat,
couldn't eat, got bedridden for a month.

Respect to Senegal for their work in eradicating malaria! Western Indonesia already did, but not yet in the East--hopefully it will catch up soon!

In my country, malaria helped defeat the South Africans apartheid regime in the Kuito Kunavale war.

In my travels I avoided malarial countries: I just didn't want to deal.

Malaria is not a pandemic, it's an epidemic. The plasmodium is dependent on mosquitos, which can only live in a warm climate. Therefore, the disease is restricted to a certain area, not the whole world (which is the definition of pandemic)

Everyone should see this. At least it will help us all understand each other.

While in Papua Indonesia, this disease is still a big issue. Even my friend told me a joke, the proof you've been to Papua is that only after got infected with Malaria.
No idea whether this is true or not
