Iztapalapa citizen in here. It's crazy. We have both floods and lack of running water at the exact same time. It's almost hilarious and we have like nothing to do about. It's not like the goverment its gonna move us or solve the floodings and most people will be born and die in the same neighborhood.

Itztapalapa is a Delegación of CDMX, you can translate it as a District, it's certainly not a neighborhood.

It’s not a neighborhood, it’s a borough that houses one million people.

It feels weird seeing an influencer talking about a place I used to go frequently like that

Iztapalapa is a borough the same as Manhattan or Queens, with dozens of neighborhoods within it

Couple answers for some very common questions:

It was placed here because an ancient civilization recieved a prophecy from their gods.

It used to be very well designed, working with the lake instead of completely overwriting it, spanish conquistadors arrived and fucked everything up.

Ive also seen people suggesting moving out to a new city. Please, try to move over 25M people out of a city, its not easy.

Iztapalapa is also HUGE, far bigger than a neighborhood

I would also like to clarify that while it is on the poorer side of mexico city, were not in "poverty" most of us do just fine and live good lifes.

Fun fact this is the result of the Spanish replacing the Venice-like city of the Aztecs with their own architecture which didn't account for anything other than solid ground

I'm from Iztapalapa! Thank you so much for taking the time to research and make a masterpiece of a video, of my hometown! I lived in, Los Angeles, Iztapalapa.
Funny how years later I would watch a video of iztapalapa, from Los Angeles California !
Loved this video. Suscribed!

I never thought I'd hear a gringo say "Iztapalapa".

It's certainly a strange feeling.🧿🧿🧿🧿🧿🧿🌋

Subsidence is an issue in Houston as well. Parts of the city have dropped 6 or more feet over the years and it's not like houston isn't prone to flooding on the coastal plane

It sinks because water is being extracted, but the problem with sinking buildings is that each one does not sink at the same rate because of different foundation methods...the buildings themselves don't cause the sinking, and as you rightly said, more areas of the city have the same problem at varying degrees, but I can safely say more than half of the city!

In case people were wondering.
They ie. the Spanish drained the lake because the old Aztec capital would have really bad outbreaks of diseases like Malaria every year. No lake no mosquitos no problem. But they also destroyed the entire ecosystem of central Mexico in the process so you win some you lose everything here.
The Aztecs before the arrival of the Spanish used to offset the malaria 🦟 outbreaks with human sacrifices. So, at least they had a plan is all I'm saying.

Mis-titled; it’s not a geography problem, it’s a planning problem

on a unrelated topic one of the photos in this has a Russian URAL truck, which led me down a rabbit hole at 4:30 am. apparently in 2004 Mexico bought like 52 URAL 4320 trucks for rual remote areas only accesable by helicopter, the fact that mexico operates Russian trucks is interesting to me, anyways hope that iztapalapa will be okay for generations to come

Mexico City is the only place I've ever seen skyscrapers that were noticeably leaning off-center.
