Tesla Autopilot 1.0 with Mobileye was Ahead of its Time

Our 2017 Tesla Model X was at the Service Center getting an upgrade from HW2 to HW3 (now called Full Self Driving Computer). My loaner was a 2016 Tesla Model X with Autopilot 1.0. I had never driven an AP 1.0 Tesla before, and I was blown away at just how good the Mobileye technology is/was. Very impressive for 2014 technology.

You are on point. Mobileye was way ahead and Tesla should not have departed. Tesla is trying to mimic what Mobileye would do, but still way behind. See Mobileye's latest videos. It's is on top of self-driving game. They can drive 1 hour without any human intervention. Also, it adapts to new country in matter of days. The old AP 1.0 is probably just one camera system that is widely used in BMW, Nissan, Hyundai etc.

Mobileye’s expected MTBF is 10^-8 not 10^-4 like competition and I do believe that Mobileye is going to win regulatory approvals and FSD race (by 2022).

PS: Mobileye used to supply Tesla with auto pilot system components before Tesla was marketing driver assistance system as auto pilot. Mobileye felt it as an unethical marketing and cancelled all ties with Tesla.

Autopilot 1.0 had only one forward facing camera from Mobileye, this is enough and the most cost efficient solution for achieving level 2 automation.

I think the only advantage of Mobileye would be the sign recognition for EU. Tela implemented sign recognition in the EU with their own system, but it can not detect any signs on the highways or any LED signs anywhere. So there AP 1.0 is still better even though it's 8 years old.

Similar Autopilot has my 2016 Mercedes C300 W205. What's also interesting is that this Model X has the same stalks as a Mercedes W205.

Mobileye is an Israeli company and has continued to develop its system. There is a video on Youtube that shows a vehicle with the latest version of their software driving through the streets of Jerusalem. Pretty comparable to what Tesla offers.

Nice video Paul! I had the MobileEye system in a Volvo. It was pretty good. Tesla stays in the lane better tho. The only advantage I found was the speed limit recognization MobileEye had. That’s coming to Tesla now tho anyways Elon said.

Our 3s have “3” but not sure about the X. The 3 front cameras on the model 3 are different focal length and have their own job.
