Roger Sayer plays J.S. Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor.

A Passacaglia is usually a fairly sombre work, written in triple metre, and formed of a number of continuous variations over a bass ostinato. BWV 582 is thought to have been composed quite early in Bach's career. It is one of his most important and best-known works, and comprises 20 variations, followed by a double fugue (the first half of the passacaglia ostinato is used as the first subject, and an altered version of the second half is used as the second subject).

I'm not well versed or generally seek out music from that era but that was magnificent.

In the case of a passacaglia, can they really be called variations?
