In my experience hunting other states that are known for trophy bucks, When a shooter shows up you know instantly that it's a shooter. When you second guess or seem to be on the fence about whether to shoot, then it's not a "shooter"

With my limited time in the woods, it’s a 💯% let er fly situation. If I had 90-100 days to hunt. Probably not.

Given that you are videoing for us I can appreciate why you passed - for me, I’m slinging an arrow LOL

It depends on how empty my freezer is. That buck could've had cheeseburgers written all over it.

I just passed a doe in this same situation. I mean not the same as passing a buck like that but she also knew I was there and I just didn't feel like taking her when she's down was the thing to do. Deer are tough that buck will make a real trophy next year.

Never pass a buck on the frst day that you’d be happy with on the last day!

Its an individual preference but I wouldn't pass a buck on the first day that I wouldn't pass on the last day of the hunt

Can't say if I would don't. I guess it has a lot to do with how my season has been going.

In south central NC, that would be the trophy of a lifetime. Assuming a clear shot in range, would definitely take it.

I think you did the right thing in leaving it alone. After seeing the deer the first thing that came to my mind was chronic wasting disease. Here in Colorado CWD is a serious issue and I will never take a deer or elk that doesn't act 100% normal.

What would deter you from shooting a deer limping? You had a very short window to take a quality shot as it turned. Now how you'd have shot while videoing in that short period is a bit of a mystery. Seems you already made your decision. Lots of thoughten going on.

I hunt in an area that is not known for big bucks, this would have been the biggest buck I have ever harvested. So yes I would have taken the shot. Der are very resilient animals and that buck will more than likely be fine if he can make it till the end of hunting season. I will not kill a deer just because it is limping. We had a 3 legged doe here a few years back and she was getting along just fine. I get just as much enjoyment out of observing deer as do harvesting one. Weather it is by trail camara, close up in person or from afar with the aid of a scope/binos. For me it is about getting out there and becoming one with nature.

For you I think you made the correct decision. You are an experienced successful hunter and have a few bucks under your belt. A less successful hunter or a new hunter may have taken the shot. To each his own I guess. I would think many states would give you another tag if the deer was diseased too, if you did decide to harvest.
