You Need an AM FM Radio Now More Than Ever. Hurricanes Helene and Milton have highlighted the critcal role of AM radio in providing weather and civil emergency information, especially to rural or remote areas. AM radio is often the only link citizens may have to vital information in emergencies.

I’m so glad there’s a push to keep AM radio in cars. When I heard that AM radios were not standard anymore in a lot of cars, the first thing I thought of was the safety aspect of it. After 9/11, I bought one of those crank-up radios. It actually came in very handy for me when there was a blackout which affected NYC in August 2003. It also has a built-in light which eliminates the need for candles. Win/win. We need our AM radios and our AM radio stations. Safety is never obsolete. Thank you for this video!!

I live in Texas, & during the uri storm power outage, my 1998 boombox luckily had batteries in it and was able to get news and entertainment on AM from a station 400 miles away in Houston TX.

A "wind up" radio can be a good thing. You want something with more than more than enough battery. The advantage of the "windup" feature on many is that you can power USB stuff from the crank.
Also it is good to have the weather band on the radio and learn what weather channel is local and the next closest. They will give you a constant report on the weather

AM, FM including pirate, CB Radio, Marine VHF, and receiving ham shortwave are all distinctly helpful.

Ive been hearing first responders and emergency workers had to break out the old school analog radios to communicate in the disaster areas

Long wire external antenna is recommended, but NO direct connection to radio antenna or it'll be overloaded, simply wrap the wire around the radio for AM or aerial for short wave, unless you have an antenna tuner etc.
Thank you for the well made presentation.

I tried AM radio during hurricane Beryl. It was a dismal failure. It was the usual political talk radio. There was no up to the minute status of the hurricane save one 20 minute segment after the hurricane had past beyond Houston. I relied on television which had much better continuous coverage. My TV has an attic OTA antenna and UPS back up when the power goes out.

Just double checked that my midland portable radio with solar charging and hand crank still works. Now this is nice for emergencies!

I have broadcast low power shortwave all over the USA and worldwide-wide from one low power transmitter. It is an excellent medium especially in an emergency. You only need a small shortwave radio to receive it.

After hurricane Sandy here on Long Island, my hand crank charged am radio was about the only outside contact for a week or so. Everyone should have one.

A crystal radio only works if a strong AM station is close by. In weak reception areas you will need a VERY long antenna. The diode detector, 1N34, needs to see .1 volts of induced voltage, in order to conduct.

Some AM radio stations were allowed to broadcast at night. They are called clear channel stations, and have more power than other AM stations that have to go off the air at night.

One of the bigger problems is with greedy AM stations broadcasting upwards of 20 minutes of commercials per hour. If that won't drive away listeners, I don't know what will. No AM station should broadcast more than 15 minutes of commercials per hour. I primarily listen to AM stations in Canada 🇨🇦 these days because the programming is better.

Use a crystal radio to receive AM when the power is out and you have no batteries!
