Wow, it’s been years since I rode an unfaired bike. The Honda 750 came out whe I was a Marine in Japan. We were camping in a valley West of Iwakuni. I heard a bike coming up the valley. It was a four that I’d never heard before. It got louder and louder and finally this guy came around a corner on the road above our camp. Here comes a biker in a Hawaiian shirt and flip flops. Stunning. It was July of 1971.

I can’t put into words how much this motorcycle would benefit by eliminating one of the discs and the caliper, pads, hardware, hoses..
A motorcycle that only weighs about 500 pounds does not need a 400 hp front brake. This motorcycle only made 59 hp on its best day in 1969 with the K1 750 Honda with sandcast cases. That was the fastest of the two valve single cam 750 Hondas..
That second unnecessary disc is a fly wheel that needs to be accelerated and decelerated. It takes energy to spin a flywheel..Do you remember the little matchbox type cars with flywheels in them that you had to spin up and then put the card on and it would go on flywheel energy.?
that second disc is also a gyroscope that does not like to change directions. Did you ever hold a gyroscope while it was spinning?
That second disc and caliper and hardware is also unsprung weight..Decades ago, Porsche started using titanium Lugnuts to hold the wheels on, just to save a few ounces. Adding pounds of unsprung wait overwhelms the front suspension and greatly hampers this suspension. You can put all the weight you want on the seat or on the foot pegs in the gas tank in saddlebags. But the worst place you can add weight to a vehicle is, on the unsprung part of the suspension..
you also have the additional drag the Second set of brake pads. If you think they don’t have drag, Jack the bike up and try to get one full spin out of the front wheel with the wheel off the ground..
how do I know all this.
because when I was Road racing, decades ago, when I won six championships and was national champion two times. I added a second disc to my race bike one race weekend..Without going into too much detail, I was slower than competitors on acceleration than I had ever been before after adding the second disc..I was actually 5 Seconds a lap slower than I had been at previous races at this track. Five seconds per lap, in a 15 lap sprint means, I would finish 75 seconds be hind where I would finish with just a single disc.. add an average speed of approximately 100 ft./s, that’s approximately 7500 feet behind where I would normally finish. That’s over a mile behind where I would normally be with a single disc. That means I would cross the finish line 1 minute 15 seconds later, At the end of a 15 lap sprint. My competitors had about 5 miles an hour, walking speed, on me out of corners, they would just walk away…
also::my motorcycle would not rotate left, right, left quickly through S turns anymore. At one track that I could take the S turns wide opened in third gear with a single disc, after adding the second disc, I always ran off the track in the second turn.. those gyroscopes do not like to change directions quickly
Through bumpy corners, my suspension would handle the first bump, and it would not recover quickly enough to handle the second ripple the third ripple and I would shatter off-line in bumpy corners, and every race track has bumpy exit corners from the cars turning the asphalt with high traction tires and high power..
.. do this bike and yourself a favor and eliminate that unnecessary second disc and hardware. The only benefit a second disc has, is, the motorcycle will break in a straight line on a straight breaking section. But, when breaking to the apex which better riders can do, having a dual disc, pulls the wheel straight, making the bike want to stand up in the corner when you want to be leaning into the corner. When you start to Countersteer to enter the corner, and you brake, that second disc pulls the wheel straight making the bike stand up in the corner.
One final handicap caused by the second disc and caliper and pads and hardware. Is brake drag..That affects acceleration, just like flywheel effect. it takes power to accelerate that second flywheel, and it has drag..
You don’t need 400 hp front brake on a 500 pound motorcycle. They don’t put dual discs on every wheel of cars
The great Graham Chapman, Formula One car designer decades ago said the one thing he adds to his cars, is lightness…
