What people THINK 80s teens wore vs what they ACTUALLY wore

Girls did wear the side pony tail a lot to school, so you could call it casual.

The petty coat was rare and dressed up but only with stocking or bare legged not work out rights. You could also add baby doll socks (little white socks that fold over with lace ) with high heels to the outfit.

And TWO pairs of this neon socks added flair to ANY outfit, skirt, jeans, athletic wear.

If you were wearing jeans, you wanted them to be as tight as possible and cuffed and tucked at the bottom - giving them the silhouette of a skinny jean. It was not uncommon for girls to use pliers to zip up their pants because they were so tight. If you were extra cool, your jeans had bleach spots all over them.

😊

I grew up in the 1980’s and I am so glad you made this video. Things were much less bright than people think. Also I can attest that the hair was even bigger than people think

You should do 1770s USA, it would be super cool to see what people wore during the revolutionary era!

Edit: I read all the comments, just didn’t respond much cuz they all make the same point

80's teen here. Yup, this is pretty accurate for most folks, though I wasn't allowed to wear shorts on public transit. But I loved neon and had a bunch of neon clothes and accessories too. (Fake leather and shiny fabric were big too.)

honestly I always just go off of stuff like "Back to the Future" for what typical 80s was bc they are all in the 80s making the movie and I think the outfits there are actually fairly tasteful compared to some stuff you see

There was also a huge surge in prairie/ western TV shows and movies, so a lot of blouses with bib fronts, mother of pearl snaps, boots with long skirts. I remember the 80's as very brown. Dark brown wood paneling, dark brown furniture, etc. Only kids or musicians wore such bright colors.

I never once saw anybody look like the outfit on the left! LIKE EVER! The outfit on the right is a lot more accurate!. I think what a lot of people miss in 80s fashion is how much influence Miami Vice had on style especially for guys. I saw a ton of pastel unconstructed clothing on guys. Skate and surf culture was everywhere with tons of board shorts, and brands like Quicksilver, Billabong and Ripcurl were so popular that even the girls wore some of those labels. Shoes went through stages in the early 80s it was all about Nike but by 85 everybody wanted Reeboks. Then Jordans came out and Vice came out and if kids had the money and wanted to wear sneakers it was about Air Jordans and if they didn't it was boat shoes with no socks. I think the thing that defined girls fashions more than anything in that era was the positively enormous hair and the very bright red lipstick. Neon was more about accessories than anything, plastic bracelets, hair clips, hair bands maybe even purses but definitely not the whole outfits.

I wore a side ponytail, cute sweaters and Lee Riders jeans. My parents wouldn't buy the expensive shoes (Nike, Adidas) so I wore ballet flats, canvas sneakers, and penny loafers. There was a huge preppy/ 1950's throwback aesthetic. We definitely wore neon accessories like scrunchies, socks, bracelets to school, but that trend was short lived, maybe 6 months to a year in 84 or 85.

Having lived through the 80s, definitely denim, so much denim compared to today, and acid wash. Neons were more late 80's early 90's so--cal/surfer trend that was only popular for a short time.

this is soo true. that's one of the reasons why I love the show 'Freaks and Geeks' so much. it's set in the early 80s (the show itself came out late 90s early 2000s), and the characters outfits looked normal, just like the right side here in this video.

Neon trended for a limited time, and certainly wasn't ubiquitous. The outfit in the right is fairly accurate, but the shorts should be longer. We called them "jammers". But we also wore a lot of denim miniskirts in a variety of washes and styles.

Your day to day 80s is spot on for me. I used to wear jeans, t shirt and a denim jacket with lots of rock band patches :)

The highlighter color was more 90s cusp. Bangs were sprayed to the ceiling! Cindy Lauper captured it 😁

Keds with white socks makes me think of my mom who was in hs/college in the 80s and I adore that look now.
A big thing that was 80s that no one I hear acknowledging is huge chunky sweaters! Those are SUPER 80s, but people tend to think of those as much more modern than that I feel like.

I wonder if in the 2060’s people will think high schoolers wore flame glasses, space burns, and neon street clothes with big puffy coats on the daily basis

My school had an 80s day and I remember my mom gave me one of her old safari shirts and a skirt she liked to wear as a teen. My classmates were all in neon and one girl commented on the big difference, "well the rest of us decided to dress as teenagers, I guess that's what adults wore."

I remember lots of denim (much of it acid-washed) and 'Blair Warner' style sweaters (not at the same time obviously). I could be wrong, but I think raves were more of a 90s thing. The day-to-day styles fell into two camps that I'll call Bon Jovi and/or Pretty in Pink. I don't recall many (or any) girls dressing in the style depicted on the left. There were a lot of fluorescent ski or surf-style winter coats, but not one dressed like Cindy Lauper (except Cindy Lauper). Side-pony, hells yes!
