I think you're right that gothic horror is the foundation of the horror genre, but I think only of "published horror" which is kinda weird. I think horror as story theme is one of the oldest story themes ever, telling scary tales around a fire I think in terms of spoken word it's much older than gothic horror. I think gothic horror absolutely popularised it and really has defined it on paper going forward though.

I think one of the issues I have with romance in horror is how shared trauma leads to romance (which is totally a thing that does happen) but it means that so much love-story in horror is rushed and happens over a really short space of time. And I know that's realistic but I do love a slowburn haha

i what to make a horror story where the main character's love interest IS the main antagonist and they slowly figure this out over the course of the story and they eventually have to choose either to side with the antagonist or against them.
