For one, it would be called the Roman Empire not the Byzantine Empire. Byzantine was a term used by Hieronymus Wolf in the 1500's to differentiate between the Holy Roman Empire and the (eastern) Roman Empire. It wasn't until the late 1800's that western historians made the name Byzantine commonplace.
