Hello. Actual atheist here. The Mandelbrot set does not give me nightmares.
Dear theists, you cannot define your god into existence.

Everytime people find something they don't understand, theists use it as a justification for God, then after someone shows it isn't magical but simply logical, the next round of theists say the last ones were ignorant but they have the actual proof which is just a repetition of the last.

I’m am a mathematician (who actually teaches Mandelbrot set) and an atheist. There is absolutely no connection between this beautiful set and theism.

Atheists don't necessarily not believe in a higher power. The basic definition is that they don't believe in a god in the religious sense. I.e. a deity that created the universe. I'm an Atheist, but I also believe that reality is eternal, and therefore, does not require a creator.

numbers are just a way for humans to standardize some variables that happen around us

False premise in title. Author plainly doesn't get atheism, fractals, nor God. "It's all mysterious and beautiful, ergo it must be divine."

As an atheist and with an MSc. on fractal geometry, I have to disagree. I also feel like you didnt understand fractals very well. Selfsimilar shapes often arise from very simple rules: copy, shrink, paste, repeat…. The beauty of fractals (which is a man made notion, and does not have any value in science) does not come from genius design, but rather from easy mechanism, that appear in nature.

Been a devout atheist since age 12, and long familiar with the Mandelbrot. It never once occurred to me that anyone would think it has religious implications. Maths just be crazy!
