Monday's Minute features the Chesapeake Bay Retriever. The CBR is considered by many the class of all the retriever breeds.

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever dog breed originated as a water dog used to hunt and retrieve ducks in the chilly chop of Maryland’s Chesapeake Bay. The dog’s sturdy build, dense coat, stamina, and strength made him ideal for this purpose. Today, he’s still known as a fine hunting dog as well as a wonderful companion for active, experienced dog owners who can give him the structure and exercise he needs.

I haven't lockedown a person to feature in a long format video but for all you Chessie fans out there, I'm working on it.

Watch Dogumentary TV on the big screen...

A minute?!! Ahhhh. Killing me man! But thanks! Hope there's a fuller video of them soon. Preferably in the field! :)

My family has had 3 Chessies. Just wonderful, distinct personalities. Definitely not as chill as other dogs, these guys have a TON of energy.

I have a male chessie. About 105lbs. Very powerful dog, loves the cold and the water. Very intelligent, in terms of hunting they just never give up.

Did you know that a big trait they were created for is guarding and watchdog work? These were the first and only American bred retriever during market hunting times before waterfowl regulation. The market hunters would hunt at night and hunt the roosts. They would sneak up to the roost water area with massive shotguns that are now banned and a bunch of chessies. They would then kill and cripple hundreds of birds in one or two shots on the water. Then they would send chessies out to retrieve all these ducks in ice cold water at night... This is where the amazing nose was developed to make these retrieves blind. Sometimes the retrieves took all night and some of the dogs never even made it back. There is one story of a bitch that crawled up onto an ice chunk and rested before finishing the retrieves. Then once they had them all retrieved they would voraciously guard the pile of ducks from thieves. They would also voraciously protect farms from predators and thieves and this was most definitely bred into them and remains to this day in many of the dogs. This is the only all american retriever and it is the pit bull of retrievers. Another story about a legend is the story of a stud they had in a working event, a trial of the day. It was a water scenario and the duck they threw up and shot for him was a cripple that swam out towards sea. The Chessie enthusiastically followed the duck but could not catch up, never the less it kept chasing until the duck and dog literally disappeared into the horizon.... Hours later the dog appeared again and you damn well know it had the duck in it's mouth still alive. It brought the duck to it's handlers hand and sat. The judges then tried throwing the dog out of the event but the spectators demanded that the event be stopped and the dog crowned the winner right there, which he deservingly was crowned. Please do some more research on this amazing breed and do a long documentary. CBR are one of the most tenacious hardest working, hardest loving breeds there is. They can be used for just about any job and their noses are as good as any scentwork dog. Many are well rounded and aggressive enough to do bite work protection stuff also. Honestly I compare them to shepherd breeds as far as workability.

Another good thing about the breed is that they are still bred to work for the most part. Most of the show bred chessies are also working bred or working bred not far back. This breed has not splintered into the 3 basically different breeds like Labs have of pet, show, working. This is a utility breed, not just meant to be pets. They are high drive working dogs that can also make excellent pets with the proper training and exercise, without that you are in trouble.

Not much information. Chessie’s are more at home in the field rather than at the show anyway...

Nice !! Guys, i would love to see a video about a breed called “Cimarron Uruguayo “. This breed its like the progenitor of the presa canario. It has a long story, and it could be interesting if this channel can make a video about that . Thanks! And keep it up with the good work!!!
