Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro comments on fraudulent voter registrations
Показать описание
After multiple counties have reported incidents of batches of fraudulent or potentially fraudulent voter registration applications, Gov. Josh Shapiro on Thursday said the system to identify attempts to submit illegitimate voting documents is working.
The comments come after multiple counties, including Lancaster and York counties, have identified batch deliveries of registrations they said are likely tied to canvassing efforts to sign people up to vote.
In many cases, officials said the fraudulent or suspicious registrations included information or signatures that had incomplete or incorrect information, similar handwriting to other applications, or were duplicate applications of already-registered voters.
But while talking to reporters in Carlisle while campaigning with Democratic Congressional Candidate Janelle Stelson, Shapiro on Thursday downplayed concerns raised by former president and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump about the fraudulent registrations and said counties' election staff correctly identified the illegitimate applications and properly had them investigated by law enforcement.
"The reason why you know about these things is because clerks of elections caught these things and said, 'Our job is to ensure we have legal, eligible voters and if they choose to vote — [they can] vote.' The system is working," he said.
