I don’t have kids. Should I get my school taxes back? If the answer is yes then I have a list of stuff I want my tax money back for, every military action since I started working being at the top of that list.

Reminder that Betsy Devos' brother is Erik Prince, founder of Blackwater, a private military contractor (gang of mercenaries).

Teachers deserve far more mention in this discussion. They are absolutely vulnerable to covid 19.

It is so sad to have a secretary of education never supports schools. She sounds like she really doesn't care.

How about we go back to having nurses on campuses instead of cops?

Saagar, there have been few studies done about covid-19 and children regarding getting it and transmitting. Open schools in Quebec (Canada) and within a week several dozen children tested positive for the virus. Most school districts don't have the funding to make it safe for children to go back and the US Federal government not committing additional funds (call Congress back) makes it that much tougher.

Saagar you are dead wrong on this one guy. Kids pass the disease to adults who don't have the benefit of a perfect health!

So who is Biden looking at for Sec. of Education and how far off from Devos will they actually administrate?

If Saagar had kids, he would probably think way differently about this issue.

How much developmental loss will happen if the teachers and parents die because of the virus spreading through schools?

Saagar, opening schools is a reward you get with a competent response to the pandemic. Kids may not die from this but they can still spread the virus at an alarming rate.

Again, please just call this what it is: extortion.

Saagar, you are way off base, "I think they should open schools. Kids have lower levels of transmission". Sounds like you are saying kids wont die, and are less likely to spread covid. So where exactly is your compassion for the parents, and grand parents? Schools should reopen when it's safe! PERIOD, AND NOT BEFORE!

Secretary of education n the president have no authority to demand that schools reopen. Even if schools reopen I wouldnt send my kids bcuz it's not SAFE period.

Saagar, imagine being a middle school teacher and making kids wear their masks. Imagine lunch, keeping kids apart, bathrooms clean, PE equipment shared. Schools need to stay shut until the virus is slowed down.. Look to Italy, they have done well.

Can't wait till I don't have to hear from her ever again.

Federal Dollars only cover about 13% of funding for public schools--which in itself is an absolute disgrace. Cutting off that little bit in inhuman and insane.

I think child transmission rates are skewed though. We went to distance learning in march, the majority if us social distanced our children for the remainder of the school year, no sports, no supermarkets, etc., and have continued that into the summer, no camp, limited friend visits, etc. So we don't really know the transmission rate amongst kids (except that camp that had to close in Mississippi or Michigan?). We also have to consider school staff, teachers, custodians, health staff, food services, etc. Its a lot.
Small districts may be able to pull it off, but cities are going to have real issues.
And what's the magic number that sends us back to distance learning? Local hospital capacity?

Sagaar you're forgetting that teachers would transmit it to other adults. As a teacher I don't want to go back and risk my life. Sorry, disagree with you on this one
