Dr. Henstrom, facial plastic surgeon at Utah Facial Plastics, has seen an increase in patients with body dysmorphic disorder and what has been referred to as "Snapchat" dysmorphia, which is when patients seek cosmetic procedures to look in real life how they look in a Snapchat filter.

He is concerned that there is an unrealistic expectation for what one should look like and discusses the motives for surgery with every patient before proceeding. Patients with BDD are obsessively concerned with perceived flaws and no amount of cosmetic surgery will fix things. The onset of BDD is before the age of 18 for two-thirds of those who experience this condition and typically starts around the age of 12 or 13. Approximately 60% are female and 40% are male.

While Dr. Henstrom offers many facial cosmetic procedures to help patients look and feel their best, he sets realistic expectations and ensures their reasons for surgery are sound before proceeding with any procedure.
