Old school cqb in SF, circa 70s when flashlights were larger, the drill was to park your flashlight as it was useless to handle and gave your position away. Things have improved, such as size and power. However, I totally agree with not using until target is known and you’re ready to take the shots.

I have my flash light with me everywhere. A because I'm 40 now and don't see so good in the dark and B it's makes a great defense weapon, will blind an attacker at night and give me just enough time to break his nose with the solid magnet base. It's the Milwaukee unit, it's awesome

I had a foot chase where I was holding both a light and a pistol trying to figure out how to work a radio. A K-9 officer came up and put the leash on his belt, using his light on his handgun to hold on the suspect and was using his radio with his other hand. Weapon lights have their place. Don't replace your handheld light with a weapon light though.
