How to stop Coin Scammers 200 years ago?

This was my latest trip to see Vincent Page and Lesley White at their new antiques auction in Taunton, England (AFS Auctions) The auction is located inside their Antiques Centre ‘Antiques On High’ I spotted these Guinea Scales going through the auction because of their original metal box, which makes them very interesting to me. These scales were vital for anyone condition business 200 years ago. Every time you were paid in a gold coin, you’d weigh the coin against one of the brass weights. The coin should be exactly the same weight. If it wasn’t, then it could be a fake, or had some of its gold either shaved off or clipped !

Thus the origin of something being "nicked"?!
