Tokyo → Narita Airport, the Cheapest | Bus vs Train vs Uber

What’s the cheapest way from Tokyo to Narita Airport? It’s not the train. Certainly we can rule taxis out. The best and easiest is actually the bus, and it’s so simple! ¥1000 ($10) one way leaving every 10 minutes — suit cases stored underneath while you ride high with nice views of the countryside via highway.

Prices and travel time:
Bus: ¥1000 / $10 | 70 min
Train: ¥3020 / $30 | 60 min
Uber: approx ¥23,000 / $220 | 70 min but straight to Hotel NOTE: Uber only has Uber black in Japan
Normal Taxi: approx ¥18,000 ($170) to Tokyo

The Narita Express vs Skyliner
If you’re going to take the Skyliner, it makes sense if you’re headed to Asakusa. It’s convenient for those living in Chiba but I like the underdog - Keisei vs JR (the empire)

The train: NARITA EXPRESS ¥3020 ($30, 60 minutes) The bus: ¥1000 ($10, 70 minutes)
It’s a simple decision! Narita Express’s Tokyo Station Terminal is DEEP and far unless you’re changing to the Marunouchi Subway line, it makes no sense (unless you want to activate your JR RAIL PASS). Locals - we take the bus unless our company is paying for this. The train has a discounted return fare but they leave every 30 min compared to every 10 min for buses. What do you think?

Since Feb.1, 2020, there is only one express bus from Narita Airport to Tokyo Station. The name of the bus is a `Airport Bus TYO(Tokyo)-NRT(Narita)`. It takes about 60 minutes and cost is 1, 000Yen(9 US dollars).

My niece was on the Narita Express train leaving Japan, when the last Big One hit. She actually liked having her bags. They were useful when stranded on the train for hours. She was posting to FB to keep herself busy.

Hi John . Thank you very much. I feel relieved to be able to get Bus instead of N’Ex to Narita Airport.

I go to Tokyo frequently and have taken the Narita Express, Keisei Skyliner and the Narita Express bus which goes to various hotels. I prefer the trains, don’t find them inconvenient the station is in the lower level of the airport and you can easily get into the Shinkansen within Tokyo station if you take the JR Narita Express. Also, if you have the JR pass the Nex train is already included in the price so no need to purchase a separate ticket. It just all depends on your travels, if going to Asakusa or Ueno then take the Keisei Skyliner to Ueno. I find the express trains to be more spacious and comfortable, toilets are clean, leg room especially roomy. The buses are much less spacious, seats are really tight for most westerners.

I always take the airport bus to and from Narita. It's only 1000 yen so it's very affordable.

The N'EX Narita Express is very expensive, yes (~¥3000-3200). The Keisei Skyliner is also expensive (~¥2500).
But I usually take the regular Keisei Line (train) to Ueno Station (~¥1000). Takes just a little longer, but way cheaper.

It really depends, though. If your hotel is really close to Ikebukuro, Shinjuku, Shibuya or Yokohoma ( *NOT* Shin-Yokohama) Stations, the _Narita Express_ is a better choice. The Keisei _Skyliner_ is a good choice if your hotel is near Ueno Station. A problem with buses is that they can get stuck in traffic, not a great idea given how bad Tokyo street commutes can be at times.

IMHO, Narita Express and Keisei Skyliner will give you a better peace of mind because there’s no chances of traffic or accidents. You won’t have to worry about getting to the airport on time because trains are almost never delayed.

Wow this is useful information, wish I knew about this back when I was in Tokyo with my friends. At least we didn't take the train on peak hours though, so it wasn't too bad. One nice thing about taking the train is you get to view the country side(-ish) while traveling between Narita and Tokyo.

This was very useful. I was looking into airport limousine, and after looking at queues I will book a hotel with a limo stop.

When I first went to Tokyo in 2013, I took the local commuter train from Narita to Tokyo Station. In 2017, I took the bus. I do remember it was 1, 000 yen for the bus. The pro of taking the bus is that it is cheap and you can see some scenery during the day. The con is that it is dependent on traffic conditions so it could take an hour or more. If one is not in a rush, it can be a great value. I usually prefer taking the bus from Narita and take the train going back.
