Chris Hipkins was unequivocal. The Labour leader had been asked to clarify his position on whether Māori ceded sovereignty. The issue of Māori sovereignty has been front and centre at major hui throughout the country.

In this interview Chris Hipkins is asked how he might deal with “dog whistling over co-governance”, if he's the caretaker leader and what he learnt from the last election result.

Why is there so much confusion with the treaty?
This should have been put to bed ages ago so country to move on

Chippy is a fool of epic proportions, constantly shoots himself in the foot, embarrassing to see as a NZer, just woeful.

Chipkins gives no examples or basis for his claim except to reference 3 totally biased points a). The courts b). the settlement process (Waitangi Tribunal) c). Acedemics.
These 3 rogue points include severe ‘infiltration’ by Activist types

Article One of the Treaty states that Sovereignty was clearly ceded

What part of those words in English ( and word-for-word translated into Maori) do people such as CHipkins not understand???

All Politicians should be educated with the facts prior to being admitted into ( Beehive) office!

Such facts would have to include their misuse of the incorrect rogue Freeman English version.
Eg:-The only ( correct) English version that the Maori one was translated from is the confirmed Busby version ( often referred to as the Littlewood version, …. It was merely given to Littlewood by Busby for safekeeping).

Article 1 of the Treaty of Waitangi says that Maori EXPLICITLY cede sovereignty. Hipkins is simply lying.

So if Maori didn't cede sovereignty how is the crown sovereign now. You're usually pretty good with the questions Moana but you failed big time on this one

Sad but important to hear Labour leadership acknowledge that they left Nanaia Mahuta alone to carry the mantle of 3 Waters

Maori ceded sovereignty (Article 1) and land (Article 2) in exchange for protection from other colonial empires and British citizenship (Article 3)

Chris mentions "one of the problems was that we left the minister responsible Nanaia Mahuta on her own to explain that. " Well that says a lot. The devil is in the detail and Chris does that well

Thank-you Chris (Hipkins). I'm a first generation New Zealander with Dutch heritage. This makes me whiter than most New Zealanders. I grew up in Christchurch, only became aware there were "Maori" people when I was about ten years old. I have followed the Maori struggle to have their Treaty of Waitangi rights honoured and recently became aware of a document that preceded the treaty "He Whakaputanga o Te Rangatiratanga o Nu Tirene" which clearly shows Maori thinking and intent to remain "Sovereign". I have not suffered one bit from the extra rights afforded to Maori since some of the treaty provisions have been upheld. I find it cruel, and dumb to see the current government's tail wagging the dog. This is a one term government for sure.

They did for crown protection against slavery and the prospect of being eaten by other Maori tribes.
FFS this is a historical fact.

Why would a warrior race who had been here for hundreds of years before the arrival of the British and who developed a strong spiritual connection to the land cede sovereignty to strangers who had only just arrived?

Māori like my tupuna spoke and read English. They refused to sign the treaty because they saw disparity between the 2 versions. To bad most of the tribes (mostly nga puhi ) saw this as a chance to consolidate their own power over the other tribes of New Zealand by siding with the colonial powers. My tupuna went on to house the first Māori parliament at papawai marae. My ngati haua iwi was also the first to propose the kingitangi movement earning us the kingmaker title. Not all tribes of NZ agreed with the treaty. Māori have amazing opportunity today. People like steven Adams and taika Waititi are testament to this. harden up, move on, and make something of your life. Reinforcing victimhood will do nothing but keep our people asking and wanting .

Should have said this and done something about it when he was in power, not after the fact
