honestly the only thing you need for handles is these. i used to combine the deflated ball with carpet make sure the carpet is clean or the dust and dander will get in your lungs☣️

Everytime I did these in high school, my handle got a lot worse, and it would make my ball control substantially worse and less controlled. Is there a physiological explanation for this?

I don't think it's a out power. If you want to go higher or faster just stand higher or dribble faster. If you push too hard you'll lose control of the ball. Most ball are bouncy already
