In an invasion, if the defender is dug in and ready, the invader faces much greater casualties. This particular situation has given Ukraine time and likely some western armaments have trickled in. Some have painted a bloody picture on this. I am definitely seeing tragedy and death ahead for both sides. I see an analogy with Britain and Northern Ireland. It looks grim.

A strong move would be for American troops to enter Ukrainian territory and stand on the border with Russia. This is not the Cold War where the USSR had some proxy states to trade before war landed on Russian soil. That said the US is probably too polite to do anything so gangster.
