I was experimenting with my voice and one day I experienced that resonance shift. Then I went onto playing around with higher notes, and felt the changes, then leaned into the mix, then singin became almost effortless. I discovered the KEY to the whole 'mix' thing. The first step is acknowledging that we're gonna have to allow the resonance to shift. But the REAL secret is in how we breathe, to allow a natural transition. I taught my mom and my sister, their range increased by an octave+ in 1 hr

Great questions. The ideal blend would be adjusting all through your range. Imagine a old-time balance scale, with chest voice on one side, and head on the other. When at the bottom of the range, chest voice will engage entirely, and as you sing higher, head voice should slowly begin to balance with the chest, until you're high enough for head voice to engage entirely. Mix voice is so helpful because it takes pressure off of chest, and allows power and ease.

... the resonance gets stuck in the chest voice (mouth cavity) and the singer continues to travel higher in their range without allowing some of the sound to transition and resonate in the pharynx, which balances the tone, and produces a more pleasant feeling (and sounding!) quality. Keep up your study! It is such a fascinating subject...

Hi Rachel, GREAT question. The main different between head and falsetto, is what the vocal cords are doing. In falsetto, the cords have disconnected, and are in an open position, which makes it quite airy, and difficult to increase volume. In head voice, the cords are vibrating along the inner edge of the muscle, making it sound cleaner, and louder. A good example of head is when Adele sings "we could have had it all, rolling in the DEEP." (Deep is head voice.)
