Maybe the best and easy to understand explanation among all the videos I've watched. Makes sense. Thank you.

iused to get good results on my chinese cleaver and basic kitchen knives following the basic rules. just recently i changed two things.
one is
my method for making a knife sharp that wasn't that sharp. as we know the sharp maker isn't really designed to sharpen dull knives. so i used all three corners of the regular rods and then used all the flats as well. them I did the same on the ceramic rods as well. i was very happy with the results.

now with this method I actually went engaged the rods from the heel of the blades to the tip using a crescent shape that stayed in contact with the rods very easily. super cool to hear the same sound feedback on each stroke. i was very happy. i start from the heel at the top of the rods and finish at the point below like normal. only no normal issue as you pointed out. i also didn't have to do a stroke adjustment as your alternate method employs. try it to see what i mean.

fr someone like me who has issues focusing. the less adjustments i have to do is always a win for me. i sharpened the lower height Nakiri blade (donated from my cousin) the same way and I had never sharpened it before, only steeled it. that wasn't working anymore and knew it needed to be sharpened.

You can reprofile with cheap chinese diamond edge pro style stones which you attach to the grey stones with rubber bands.

I guess my diamond hones from the Lansky system are more suitable than that Spy. Sharpener for very hard steels like ZDP-189, K390, CPM S110V and even Maximet.

Anytime there is too much thought put into a task it usually turns to shit. Just sharpen your knife without thinking too much about it. No need to make a mountain out of a molehill.

Spyderco tool in the kitchen using both sets of stones is the best daily way to keep any knife as sharp as it can be maintained . Have used mine for 35 years and I still have to tell my wife, “ Be careful, the knives have just been re honed “

Most Sharpmaker videos don't discuss what's going through the minds of knife guys trying to improve their skills on various different blades- yours does. Kudos. You nailed it. It helps that what you discuss... I've come to the same conclusions. I would add one small thing. To get the tip right, by drawing down on the stones in an arc as you suggest- move the sharpener to a plane several inches below your normal range of motion. That really helps consistency. For example, for the tip arc, I move my Sharpmaker from the counter to a chair lower than my waste

Theoretically....I think the majority of people overthink sharpening. Cavemen learned a rock and obsidian chips can create sharp tools. Not rocket science. K.I.S.S. Is one of my favorites

I have the sharpmaker and the kme. Sometimes I just don't want to spend an hour on the kme getting a mirror polish. The sharpmaker works fine for quick touch ups and on knives that aren't extremely dull. Your tip on pulling the handle up is a great one. I was doing what you showed, pulling the handle in, to get to the tip. Do you use the edges of the stones as well or just the flats? Thanks.

What I would recommend is if you have not had your knifes sharpened in a long time take them and have a professional sharpen them all. At that point he will have put the correct bevel on the blades. Then at that point all you have to do is maintain the razor sharp edge with your new sharpener. It will save you a great deal of time. I've had mine since 1986. I have alot of experience sharpening knifes. But for the average person you have to begin with a proper bevel. After that getting that razor sharp edge is a piece of cake. It's all about the correct bevel. Sharpening knifes is a life long learning experience. Before long all your family will be asking you to sharpen there knifes. Have fun.

On the Spyderco Triangle Sharpmaker, will I harm my Wusthof knives that have a 14deg. angle blade (28deg) if I use the 30deg side of the sharpener?
