Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal made a major announcement today promising a monthly salary of Rs 18,000 for priests of temples and 'granthis' of gurudwaras if the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) comes back to power in the upcoming elections. He has stated that registration for the scheme will begin tomorrow and that he will personally initiate the process at the Hanuman Temple. Welfare for priests or pujaris comes after Mr Kejriwal already promised Rs 2,100 for poor women and free medical treatment for those above 60 years of age. The BJP has called all of this an eye wash, an attempt by the AAP to take the attention away from its failures. But what does a scheme for priests mean for the politics of the Aam Aadmi Party?
