Open world rpg's? Trpg's? Arpg's? Crpg's? Could be my imagination but I think I'm seeing a pattern here. Truth be told, I hold all these in high to very high regard as well. Good vid.

I like to play a lot of genres:

- Narrative/Puzzle focused Adventure games (Disco Elysium, Deponia Series, …)
- Walking Simulators (Gone’s Home, Everybody’s Gone to the rapture, …)
- City/Park Builders (Cities Skylines, Jurassic Park Operations Genesis, …)
- Open World RPGs (Skyrim, Witcher Series, …)
- Simulators (Hunter Call of the Wild, Sims Series, …)
- Open World Games (GTA Series, AC Series, …)
- Arcade Racing Games (Pixar’s Cars [played that in my childhood a lot], Forza Horizon 4)
- Horror games (Outlast, Layers of Fear, …)

Something about this list cracks me up.
RPGs with no gameplay, RPGS with too much gameplay, RPGs with no story, RPGs on a grid, and RPGs.
I mean, it makes sense, but when you lay it out like that it reminds of that monty python sketch where everything on the menu is just different preparations of rat.

CRPGS, Grand Strategy Games, Tactical RPGs (I'm presuming you're dropping XCom in this category as well. At least in its Firaxis evolution), ARPGs, Turn-based Strategy games (especially since I'm dropping Football Manager in this group).

I would recomend you to play Paradox grand strategies, especially Stellaris and Crusader Kings. I was genuinely shocked when I realized that they are actually role playing games that disguise themselves as 4x strategy games. And if CK is more obvious in that, Stellaris is an interesting twist when you realize that you are roleplaying an entire space-fantasy race.

I'm happy to see you didn't even mention JRPG. I started playing games in my childhood in this category on SNES and PS1 (FF, Dragon Quest, Shin Megami Tensei, Breath of Fire, etc) and have fond memories of them, but when I discovered Fallout 1 and Baldur Gate 1 my gaming life changed. The JRPG genre is so silly today compared to other RPGs, like visual novels you don't have control of the plot mixed with combat.

in no particular order, some of my favorites

1. I love open world RPGs but I also haven't gotten too deep into many released in the last decade, because... yeah, they've gotten increasingly formulaic and casual, for lack of a better word, to the point most of them I wouldn't even call RPGs. Every Triple-A game has superficial and pointless 'RPG' elements tacked on. But Bethesda 'classics' like Morrowind and Oblivion got me through hard times and I find myself still going back to them, modded or vanilla. Kenshi was a recent love for me in this genre. It straddles the line between a whole buncha genres but if I were pressed I'd simply call it an open world RPG.

2. Life sims are also a favorite genre of mine, even if there's only ever been one flagship franchise for them and even if The Sims 4 is pretty much rubbish. 2 and 3 are timeless and I'm looking forward to whether Paralives is able to stir up the water enough for there to be competition and innovation in the genre again.

3. Traditional roguelikes. Varies greatly from game to game and how malicious their design philosophy is towards the player but examples like DCSS and Caves of Qud are some of my all time favorite games

4. CRPGs because duh

5. Immersive sims (Looking Glass, Arkane, etc.). Ultima Underworld still blows me away with how forward-thinking and playable it feels to this day, even lacking things as simple as mouselook.

...yes these could all variably be classified as RPGs, I'm sure that's gonna be a pattern for a lot of people

I think for me my casual pleasure in gaming is open world RPGs. I enjoy the 'explore at your own pace' approach they take. I do enjoy a variety of tactical games as well, from XCOM to looser interpretations like Valkyria Chronicles. I don't play FPS games as often anymore, but I do have a lot of time in the Borderlands series. Someone in the comments reminded me that I enjoy 'spacer' titles as well, whether it's action oriented or presented as an RTS format like Sins of a Solar Empire. I suppose those titles scratch that same 'open world' itch, just on a stellar level.

Have you ever thought about showing off your characters builds for the rpgs you play? Could be a new aspect for your channel.

Not sure you already have a vid on this but would you go over some of your fave games of each genre (besides crpgs which you do have a vid on). I'm curious especially on what some good TRPGs would be to check out.

My own list:
- RPG's (I like JRPG, CRPG, and TRPG's equally)
- 3rd Person Shooter
- Survival Horror
- Interactive Movies (Heavy Rain, Until Dawn, etc)
- Real Time Strategy

Honorable Mention:
- Grand Strategy
- Stealth (Tenchu)

While you tend to stay away from reviewing arpgs, I'd really appreciate your take on Grim Dawn, which is one of my personal favorites, even though I'm also more casual into it, in a way that basically beats the campaign once or twice just for the fun experience.

From your CRPG footage (real shocker here, I didn't see that one coming at the number one spot) I can see that Ember has been given a Ring of Pyromania.
And the fact that I can say that just by looking at the combat log means I play too much WotR.

My favorite genres are rpgs action, open world, turned based, crpg style American or Japanese I love it all. Although as I've gotten older I've definitely found the stuff with turn based combat has become more appealing. Right now though I'm playing Dungeons & Dragons: Dragonshard 2005 RTS action rpg hybrid.

Mortim, love the content and who know's if you'd see this: can you add a graphic indicator intro-ing the name of the game being shown? I always find myself digging the comments for the name when I see a cool new clip, even to the point i distract myself from hearing you say it

the trick about open world rpgs is, that you have to make your own story. head canon and all and the game itself is merely a stage for your own story. than they're awesome

Curious about your thoughts on JRPG’s and if you have any favorites.

i have to say, your number 1 caught me by surprise :3

just out of curiosity (and because i just installed it again ) have you played the ARPG´s Sacred 1+2?

i am pretty much in the same boat as you, but more so mood dependent. like not always the patience for Disco Elysiums style of gameplay.
sometimes i need a nice top down/twin stick shootie boom boom ^^

anyways, keep up the good work
