Elon Musk revealed the challenges in producing the Starship rocket
Hey everyone, Welcome back to Great SpaceX.
Elon Musk has just revealed the challenges in producing the Starship rocket.
The root cause comes from a tweet by a space fan with the account name Jerry, who gives a comparison image of the rockets using methane and oxygen, including Terran 1, Terran R, Vulcan, New Glenn, and Starship that will be able to launch this year.
And Elon Musk responded, “Design is easy, production is hard”.
Why do you suppose he said that?
It is absolutely true. Currently, there are many beautiful and perfect 2D and 3D designs of SpaceX's Starship on social networks and media such as Youtube and Twitter.
But the design drawing and the production are completely different. That's also why, among a bunch of other private companies, only SpaceX can produce Starship.
So, What are the specific challenges in Starship production?
First, The technical challenge.
Elon Musk employs some of the smartest engineers on this planet, and they’re still, in many ways, fumbling toward solutions for the extremely hard problem of getting a super-large vehicle out of Earth’s gravity well into orbit—then to land it and fly it again.
Starship has a huge size, with a diameter of 9m, and will be 120m high when combining the two stages together. It will be the biggest rocket of all time. This size will interfere with the assembly of stainless steel parts.
In addition, Starship will be designed to keep itself from burning up in the atmospheres of Mars and Earth by adding lots of heat shields to its hull.
Next, inside the Starship Super Heavy, it integrates a lot of things. The second stage will be designed to become a cargo area, and at the same time will be equipped with many seats, entertainment and rest areas for 100 passengers. The first stage is the super heavy booster, which is intricately designed with tanks containing materials such as methane and oxygen during flight.
The hardest part of any rocket is the engine. And SpaceX is almost there with the Raptor engine iterations. Indeed, engineers will have to work out the most powerful Raptor ever to be able to transport goods and people to Mars, a distance of 368.49 million kilometers (229 million miles) from Earth. Through the tests, Raptor held the record for the highest combustion chamber pressure ever reached by an operational rocket engine, at 330 bar, surpassing the record held by the RD-701 rocket engine at 300 bar.

NASA, yeah... when mentioning NASA, what comes to your mind?.
yep... Exactly, NASA is the US Space Agency, the number one aeronautical agency in the world. In1969 put a man on the Moon for the first time. NASA also has completed our solar system’s reconnaissance, with an intense investigation of all the planets. NASA has also dramatically changed our understanding of the universe around us, as well as our planet. NASA is like every child's dream when seeing a spacesuit, also the pride of the entire American nation. The agency that directly competes with the extremely powerful entity is none other than Russia.
With all the advantages like that, who can surpass the domination of Nasa?

To stop the echo on the girl (sorry don't know here name) I would get a cheap lapel mic plug it into a phone use the voice recorder app then sync it up in post. Or since she's in front of a green screen hang some towels near her to stop the bounce. The lapel mic is the easiest. Cheers keep up the great work.

Very good report. Sound is better than before when the young lady speaks in the room. A slightly improved microphone might help. But, very nice to see an actual person.

The girl's voice is a lot clearer and better to understand now. I don't know what was done, but it was a good job ( electronic speech...? )!

At 2:28 368.49 million km to Mars?? Where did you get that crazy number from? The shortest distance during a close opposition is about 55 mill. km. A rocket will not travel in a straight line - true, but 368 mill. km seems quite a bit exaggerated..

good episode. Space is hard. I guess they don't call it "hard vacuum" for nothing? ... Nice pace and thanks for leaving the bots out.

So far I don't think SpaceX has any issue with financing Starship development. Previously they said development would be around 5 billion. The NASA HLS contract was for 2.9 billion with SpaceX supposedly footing half the development cost. Lunar Starship needs the rest of the Starship ecosystem to function. So the 2.9 is likely funding the overall Starship development. If so it looks like SpaceX is even with Lunar Starship expecting development to cost a little over 6 billion. 2.9 billion from NASA, 250 million or so from Yusaku Maezawa and SpaceX putting up 2.9 billion or thereabouts.

Seeing as SpaceX has somewhere north of 80% of the world's commercial launch market. I don't think 2.9 billion in development cost spread out over several years is much of hardship for the company at all. In fact it seems they're spending a lot more on Starlink than they are on Starship.

I watched Star Trek:First Contact last night. Now I remember where I'd seen the starship design, it's a dead ringer for Zefram Cochrane's Phoenix, just bigger. At least Cochrane had the good sense to use a tried and tested Titan missile for his booster stage, although I don't know how he got it back to Earth. Maybe the Enterprise beamed it back to Earth, but he didn't know they'd be there when he was planning the flight. Maybe he was planning a one-way trip into oblivion, like Musk's mission to Mars.
