Is The Era of 1080p Monitors Finally Over?

I feel like I need to remind you that the majority of the world is relatively poor and cannot afford the kind of monitors praised on tech channels, so of course the majority of gamers still rock a 1080p screen and a '60 tier video card, they don't cost as much while providing a decent experience.

In a sense, I feel like the tech channels live in a bubble where they essentially address the middle and high class of developed countries making it seem like 'the norm', but that audience is a minority if you look at things globally.

Guys, AMD and Nvidia are still selling CURRENT GEN GPUs marketed towards 1080p gaming. They are so out of touch in this clip...

I have 1080p, I do not see reason to change. it is good enough for me

In Brazil 1440p and 4k displays are still very expensive and the market is dominate by 1080p screens. Here, this is era is far from over.

I don't see 1080p going away, small laptops like 13.3 inch or smaller don't need 1440p or higher. In monitors also, for smaller sizes, 1080p will be relevant. Also, with the rising GPU costs, driving anything more than 1080p isn't easy.

Third world countries have a disagreement.

1080p on a good 24" is so good, and it requires little resources. No way it's gonna disappear

The era of 1080p monitors can’t be coming to an end when they account for 60% of main displays according to Steams Hardware Survey. 1440p which you’d expect to eventually take 1080p’s crown is still less than 20%.

I would rather see good 1080p screens with oled at decent pricing.

While I often agree with DF, I feel this is one of the many times their focus on the mid to high-end ignores the experience of low-end users. I don't think they're the worst in gaming space, far from it with their focus on optimized settings, upscampling/reconstruction tech and Series S in console comparisons. I've seen gamers say that the Series S should be abandoned so games can become more bloat... I mean 'next-gen' and fetishise Ultra settings and native resolution, when I bet they couldn't tell the difference between Low and Ultra.

And this is coming from the perspective of someone who plays on a 1440p monitor at well above 60fps, probably may have to compromise on that once I catch up on releases.

I'm watching this on a 1080p monitor. So, to quote Maverick: "Maybe so, sir. But not today.".

People still play games at 720p resolution. Whether it's mobile gamers (some use emulators on their phones to play console games), Switch gamers, people who play with APUs in mini PCs or people who play with handheld gaming PCs like the Steam Deck (it has a screen resolution of 800p but more intensive games have to be played at 720p). 1080p gaming as a whole will probably never die out and instead will eventually become the bare minimum resolution for gaming in the future.

biggest reason is not having to upgrade frequently, you don't need expensive hardware for 1080p

not everyone is hardware freak, some people just want to play games

Believing that 1080p is "over" is the most out of touch statement I've heard yet from you guys. It's the most popular resolution, and will continue to be for another decade or more.

I literally just bought a 27" 1080p 165hz HDR monitor two days ago. $130 on sale and it's awesome.

I still think 1080p is a great resolution. Back in 2020 i got an LG ultrawide for $150, and wine it's 1080p it's still really nice and does what i need for both games and work. I needed the extra horizontal space for a word doc and a web browser.

STEAM survey of January 2024 shows that still a majority of gamers uses 1080p monitors. Me included.

No, it's far from over, and any argument against it feels slightly elitist.

No, in fact we cannot even run that many games at higher resolutions without the use of some form of upscaling or frame generation goes to show that we did not even progress that much from a decade ago.
The 1080ti-like performance GPUs are still being sold to this day and that is a GPU from 7 years ago.

Still using 1080p monitors after 13 years. They serve my needs and I imagine they still do for a lot of people. For the folks who throw out their old phone just because a new shiny one hits the market and build an entire system every time there's a new GPU launched perhaps this is the case. It just seems really wasteful to me.
