Those cold frames remind me of Winter Sowing, seeds panted in February in 1/gal milk containers with holes in the tip and bottom (for air/water and drainage). The seeds seem to do ok with no tending at all. It must be those sugars you mentioned. I have an old window sitting in the shed that I'd like to try on your cold frame. I feel another 'project' coming on!
