I remember when I was in grade school, my teacher said either use "in my opinion" or "I think". If you say "in my opinion, I think..." is redundant because "in my opinion" means "I think".

In Malaysia, we were taught at school that "There is a lot of people" because "is" was referring to "a lot" rather than "people". We were told that "are" was correctly used only when the sentence appeared as "There are lots of people". This rule was stated in our syllabus and the examination papers also tested on this. It seems that I was misled then. Gosh!
