Protecting a tree from lightning - Lightning Protection System

Показать описание
You will usually find lightning protection systems on large, historic, old or noteworthy trees at public gardens or arboreta, but they can also be installed on large trees near your homes. Lightning usually strikes the tallest tree or ones atop a hill. If installed, electricity will travel from the top of the metal cable into the ground and away from the tree. You can also install a breaker on the cable to indicate a lightning strike.

Holy wow these things are all over Northern Arizona! Most were installed in the late 70s early 80s. When I was a young man, I met the guy that did practically all of them, though I can't recall his name. I've never seen one that's been maintained in 15 years in the field. Mostly I'm called to remove the tree they're installed in, after it's been struck by lightning, often multiple times. Around here they're installed in the taller ponderosa pines, in a bid to draw lightning away from structures. They make quite the mess sometimes, with several feet being vaporized or liquified, huge scorch marks on the ground, exciting stuff.
