Are you becoming a germophobe? I’m not against protecting yourself against the coronavirus or any virus for that matter. Yes, masks and washing your hands are incredibly important. But, here’s the thing, not all microbes are harmful.

Friendly microbes are not pathogenic. Pathogens are microbes that can cause disease. A huge part of your immune system is friendly microbes. These microbes live all over your body on the inside and out. When you over-sterilize your body, this can lower your immune system and make you more susceptible to infections.

A few benefits of your friendly microbes:

• Certain microbes make acid that makes a pathogen not want to live in that environment.
• Friendly microbes make vitamins to support your immune system.
• Friendly microbes have anti-tumor properties.

In some studies done on mice, they found that mice without any microbial life were more prone to autoimmune diseases, allergies, asthma, and other health issues.

Your skin flora is very necessary to protect you—it’s an immune defense. When you alter this microbiome, you basically throw the body out of balance, and you could develop inflammatory conditions.

Over-sterilization can also lead to a decrease in T cells, which are important in preventing inflammatory reactions throughout the body.

Even sterilized food (pasteurized food) goes through a process that kills off everything, including enzymes. These sterilized foods can potentially weaken the immune system.

Thanks for watching! There’s no need to be a germophobe. Some microbes provide a lot of benefits, especially for the immune system.

I've been a germaphobe for decades, but I don't use hand sanitizer. I also don't sit on my bed with clothes I wear out in public, wear shoes in my apartment, and I wash my hands like a normal person anytime I come from outside. Funny seeing everyone freak out now going way overboard.

The virus might turn out to be less deadly than the secondary diseases like OCD, PTSD, Anxiety, depression, etc. Don''t give into it.

Funny thing today at 4pm I had a headache, I went outside and started pulling bugs off my vegetables in the vegetable patch, after an hour messing around out there my headache was gone and hasn't come back. Every time I don't feel well I go outside now for an hour or so and then feel so much better.

Stupidly I bowed to peer pressure and started wearing latex gloves for protection -
Big mistake, I clearly was allergic to that particular type, but after wearing them I had raw and cracked knuckles, too a few weeks to heal-

Back to nature's ways and I'm pleased to say the first line of defence (skin on hands) all back to normal.

As for the germs, I grew up playing in dirt as a kid and touch wood I'm healthy still.

I've always been a germophobe and that's why I prevent flu and colds and never use chemical-filled hand sanitizers. I avoid public bathrooms and if I have to, I don't even touch the bathroom stall locks without the paper towel. I know people who don't practice hygiene and ridicule me are always getting sick.

All about "and wash your here I am in my own home washing my hands every five minutes. It just was not making any sense as to why I would be peeling off my own layer of skin by handwashing in my own domain? I stopped doing it. It seems to me that with all sterility of our environment, we are making ourselves more susceptible to illness. I really needed your message Dr. Berg, thank you.

I was just thinking about that while grocery shopping the other day and also thinking about how nice it is that the other shoppers there and I were required to stay 4 feet away from each other. So nice. I was also was thinking about the issue you discussed here, about how much germs we are exposed to as children and throughout our lives which help our immunity. Still, I do make it a habit to wash my hands often because I work in healthcare and it's been drilled into me all these years

I totally agree with you Dr. Berg. Over sterilization is not good. Also, I agree with you about the our body fights off viruses. Some people I know doesn't agree with me on this. I am going to share this video on Facebook in hopes people will educate themselves on this video. Good video!

Good personal hygiene prevails. Fear and anxiety over every little thing is not good. Worse yet are those who think being over reactive is acceptable.
