PART 1 of 3. In this video, Kevin Tetz shows you how to repair flaking clearcoat and make your car look great again. He demonstrates his techniques using the hood from his awesome 1966 Jaded Mustang that was featured in many magazines and debuted at SEMA 2012. Kevin shows you how to properly prep and mask the area, spray new clear and buff the new clear until it matches the original. One of his secrets is the Eastwood 2K Aero-Spray paint. It's a two component paint in an aerosol! That's right, the durability of a paint that has a catalyst, but the luxury of a spray can!

Eastwood's 2K High-Gloss Clear Aerosol allows you to paint with the durability and precision of a two-component coating without the paint gun! Formulated with Eastwood's proprietary nano ceramic technology to provide a long-lasting and durable finish, while keeping its beautiful finish for years. The innovative nozzle and valve technology, combined with its two internal chambers, ensure the right ratio is mixed every time. Sprays like a gun with a broader spray pattern than conventional aerosols and no mess to clean up. You'll achieve professional results from an easy-to-spray aerosol.

Eastwood has everything you need to do the job right - welders, plasma cutters, soda and abrasive blasters, powder coating supplies, paint and paint guns, hand tools, metal fab tools and more.

Hi Guys.  Respectfully, to those of you complaining that Kevin is talking too much:   Keep in mind that his target audiences are "Newb" enthusiasts as well as young people that have interest in automotive vehicle maintenance. These aren't targeted towards seasoned collision repair techs, or weekend car warriors. That's why he doesn't use terms like "Delamination", or "Iron Oxide" excessively and keeps the terminology to a minimum. I've been in the business a number of years and, while he does make an occasional mistake (who doesn't), his vids are good. Unlike some training vids from manufacturers, he's not boring and keeps your attention.  It's hard enough as is trying to get today's younger generation to put down their IPHONEs and encourage them to learn these trades. Kevin manages to connect with them.

I think you are right! Back in the 70"s clear coats lasted. In fact they advertised you never need to wax again. I had 2 cars over 14 years and never waxed them. They looked much like the day I bought them when I traded them in. Today I see clear coats cracking with delamination regularly. I also think it is the poorer quality paint that expands in the heat causing the clear coat to crack allowing uv rays to penetrate the paint. Or a paint that expands in the heat and a clear coat that can't.

I always put masking paper on before the rolled edge, that allows you to more easily to roll back edge of making tape for second light coat and then pull tape off and dust with edge blender

I bought a 2 year old Mercedes that was sitting on a dealer's lot for 7 months that was near a freeway.  The horizontal surfaces of the car has what feels like sandpaper granules embedded in the clearcoat, maybe 6 per square inch.  I'm guessing that it was a result of acidic fallout particles from the freeway that bonded to the clearcoat.  I tried buffing with a moderate rubbing compound which got some of it off.  I then  went to a slightly courser rubbing compound, which was probably a mistake, as it got off the remainder of the particles, but left a few swirl marks. The swirl marks are not just chemical residue on the surface but microscopic scratches in the clearcoat.  Is there any fix to this problem?   Can you buff out these kind of scratches?
