Camellia bush care | How to prune camellia | How to fertilize camellia

We will look at how to prune and fertilize camellias. Typically, you want to remove dead, damaged, and diseased branches off of camellias at anytime of year. Once spring vegetative growth emerges you want to take out the longer "leggy" branches on the camellias. Do not prune once floral buds have set on your camellias.

Fertilize at the same time you prune off the leggy vegetative growth in the spring. Use a high nitrogen slow release with 3-5% iron.

Thank you for sharing your tips. I have one Japonica Camellia which is very productive, bloom all year around. I read that we should prune Camellia after blooming season to prepare for next blooming. However, my camellia tree always has a lot of buds waiting to bloom. I am not sure when to prune it in order to keep it healthy without cutting off the flower buds and new sprouts? Do you have any suggestion for me?

Thanks for your video. We live in the Salinas Valley, Ca. I don't know what kind of camellia we have. It blossomed in Dec.-Jan. It's now March 5, and the blossoms are all done except for one. So I think it's time to prune. But what part of the branch should I cut? Do I cut just the blossom, and let the rest of the bush keep growing, or do I cut at the first joint of the branch, which is what I just did to two branches. If I keep that up, there won't be much left to the bush.

I want to add a white Camilla to a South facing area about 4’ from my house. It will get sun until about 3:00. Would that be suitable?

Thanks, just what I needed. I bought a home with a lot of landscaping including several roses and about 20 camellias. I did not have experience with either roses or camellias. I have been wondering when and how to prune the camellias and you have answered my question. I have applied a liquid 3 in 1 product to feed and protect from diseases and insects. Most of the camellias ore in the front of my house and are planted behind a wall or boxwood hedge. I want to promote growth to make them more visible. How would I do that. ? Would pruning the lowest limbs help? I have one plant that has a bad case of powdery mildew. I have applied dormant oil but it persists. Should I remove the leaves that are affected? That would be most of them.

Liked and subscribed. Certified arborist here, and caretaking 202 acres with loads of camellia japonica. We've had some deer damage on some camellias and I'm struggling with the owner who keeps insisting that i leave the waterspouts (suckers) growing vertically from the base and rootball. My belief is these are problematic, whether they compete for dominance, or they block access to maintaining the interior of the shrub (removing saplings, vines and such). The owner thinks the suckers will help fill in the lower bare areas on the trunks but I've explained that we'd rather that be filled in by lateral branches originating from the main trunks. Love to hear your opinion. I know the answer with trees but I'm still learning with different shrubs. TY

Hey plant doctor it's me again. Well I have 2 Camellia Japonicas. They are very healthy and produce a lot of buds. But when the time comes for them to bloom, so many of those buds dry out and fall. Could it be because they get direct sun (2-3hours only) or is it because of potassium deficiency?

Hi Doc, I finally have a place for my first camellias. Both about 1-2 years old and still small. Would they benefit from pinching the growth tips in spring or should I leave them be for a couple years?
