Great video. It does spark the conversation. Coffee growing is a complex deal and bringing prosperity to farmers is not solely aligned with sustainable agricultural practices and shade drown coffee. The equation becomes harder to balance when you include price, productivity, farm size and living income, among others. Rainforest/UTZ has modified those shade parameters maybe to watch out productivity indicators for smallholder farms in latam. Within the industry we face complex dynamics far beyond Agroforestry as the only solution to te wide arrange of challenges there exist, despite all its positive impact and being imperative to massively advocate for a transition towards shade coffee... when it makes sense for the farmer first ✌🏼☕️🌱

A tip for the coffee grounds that my botanist father taught me is that they can also be used as a fertiliser in plants (be careful with that, tho, every plant has different needs and would react different). Coffe grounds also repel certain bugs, insects, snails AND the cats from eating your plants just because they don't like the smell, so they would'nt even approach your plants but the coffee nor the smell would harm them

In Belgium roasted chicory root is a common coffee substitute. It was first used as a necessity during various coffee crises, but it stays popular today especially as the brand Ricoré (60% chicory, 40% coffee). It works well as a replacement for coffee in latte-type drinks. My understanding is that chicory root is a lot more sustainable than coffee.

I love your impact videos!!
My tip, for those that use a Senseo-machine: there's something called a coffee duck (do mind that there are a couple of different sizes for different kinds of machines), which eliminates the need for the disposable Senseo pads. It's a bit more 'work', but the coffee is so much tastier and you can avoid a lot of waste. Also, I've yet to find an eco-responsible coffeebrand that works with pads, so now I can use better coffee while still using the machine I got before my sustainability journey began.

just subscribed to Wren and also added the past emissions to my bill. Well worth it. I was surprised at how low I was in carbon emissions well below the UK average when I took the test. I gave up my car beginning of last year and I don't really miss it.
I have committed to minimalizing my belongings and eating no processed food. I have been inspired by you and Anja's artworld to strive for a calmer more intentional way of living.
Wish me luck x

Here in the Netherlands we have Moyee which is a fairchain brand that is very transparent and concerned with the social conditions of workers and value addition in the countries of origin. They also ship abroad, check that out!

I'm really curious to know more about the impact of juice! I don't drink tea or coffee, only herbal tea from a local shop.

I love tea and it's so nice to find local tea growers in my community. I avoid bagged tea but now I only buy loose leaves. When I was trying to live more sustainably I never considered how much impact my daily drink had, so thank you for the video!

Dandelion roots, roasted are actually a fantastic substitute for coffee, and incredibly healthy too.

US (especially west coast) friends, I highly recommend Seven Coffee out of Seattle; the beans are grown in Hawaii, they're a zero waste cafe, they offer bulk purchases and the bags are 100% compostable, and if you order online they offset any carbon emissions plus their coffee tastes amazing (Bitch Blend is my favorite 😂) and is reasonably priced for all the standards they hold

Not to overstate the obvious but… one way to reduce the impact of coffee (and the water used to make coffee) is simply to not waste it. We have reduced our overall coffee consumption by half during the past few years and we only make what we know we will drink. We use a Bialetti and make small amounts of coffee. In comparison, I can remember the times in our staff room at school when there was always a pot of coffee on, so much of it was wasted. Great video Gittemary, thanks so much for the excellent info. 🌎💦Ⓜ️ary

I switched from coffee to tea about a month ago because there is a native plant to my area that I can make caffeinated tea with. (It’s yaupon holly). But I was so addicted to the caffeine level in coffee that I never drank my yaupon tea. Now I’m tea everyday and will be drinking tea from native foraged plants too!

Could you make a video on the impact of jewellery, particularly stainless steel, silver and gold ?
I'm someone who really loves silver jewellery and I always try to avoid the packaging/bags etc but I don't know anything about the impact of the jewellery itself
Thanks :)

I prefer to buy Australian grown coffee (I'm in Australia) as we know coffee is grown more ethically due to laws. I love my pod machine but I have bought reusable pods, which are also Australian made, and then the used grinds go into my compost bin.

I signed up for Wren! I was looking to expand my carbon offsetting practice anyway and Wren looks like the perfect initiative to support a just transition and climate justice at the same time!
My coffee recommendation would be Moyee Coffee! I've bought my coffee from this brand ever since I started drinking coffee regularly and it is damn delicious, but more importantly: it's mostly shade grown and by small, local coffee farmers, you can 100% trace back where the coffee was grown and by who. Rather than buying the unrefined coffee beans and letting all value creation processes like roasting the beans happen in the Global North, Moyee lets all of those processes happen locally where the coffee was grown, so the capital gained benefits the local community rather than companies in the Global North.
