Epiphone has actually been around longer than Gibson

I was the type of guy that had multiple epiphone's because all of them did different things that I liked but my Gibson does all those things right

I agree that the Gibson is the superior guitar. I have several Epiphone guitars and all are very good for the price of one Gibson.

My son and I have been able to play quite a few Gibson SG's as well as Epiphone and I would say most higher Epiphones play and feel pretty consistent but I've only recently played one that felt like a real SG and it was some Prophecy model with Fishman pick ups. However my son and I bought a late 80's Greco SG Standard and after playing that there is no need for a Gibson Or an Epiphone the same goes for his 1979 Greco RG 750 Standard

Imo epiphone using poly makes them the only option I'm willing to buy. I don't like my finish wearing down

Comparing them based solely on the sound coming through a distortion pedal doesn’t seem a fair comparison

Great video. Epiphone has really upped their game. I think higher end epiphones are as consistent if not better assembled than the average Gibson, hardware and electronics and parts quality is the biggest difference to me. More epiphones I’ve played over the last 5 years have been assembled better than the average Gibson, but then it never sounds as good. So you could buy an epiphone and upgrade the parts, and it will play better still and sound as good, and you’ve spent more on the epiphone than a Gibson at that point. This is all to say…just buy an Eastman instead. You’ll get top notch build quality, and top notch parts at a fraction of the price.

I’ve owned two Gibson Les Pauls. Just picked up a 2023 Epi SG Standard and for the money it’s really impressive. Definitely a keeper!

Kind of hard to get a good idea of the sound with a ton of effects layered on top of it. So suggestion: How about starting with a clean amp setting and the guitar volume and tone controls dimed so you can hear the basic sound of the instrument. Then demo each pickup soloed and together. After that repeat with some dirt and only then show how well it plays with effects. That would have been far more informative. The difference in sound between the two is 90% the pickups. The rest is almost entirely due to the strings being used. So always try to use a fresh set of the same strings on both instruments and make sure both guitars are setup properly to get the most evenhanded comparison possible.

I have both. The Epiphone is objectively better. The Gibson makes you FEEL better...

I bought the Gibson SG a few years ago and it has the neck binding with those fret nibs. I hate them. I often find the 1st string gets caught between the fret and the plastic nib. If ever I need to do a re-fret the nibs will go.

The Gibson is better by default! Unless you're willing to install stainless steel frets and have them Pleked on your Epiphone, by the nature of Epiphone's unpolished and unleveled frets the Epiphone will never come close!

I own the Gibson. If it was not for the neck I would have bought the Epiphone. Slim taper is just too thin for me.

I've had many situations (financially) where I could've purchased a Gibson...in fact just recently went with the intent to buy a Gibson Les Paul...but ended up going with an Epiphone Les Paul...I just thought it played better, in my opinion...Vinnie Moore also prefers his Epiphone SG as well.

my girl bought me an Epiphone SG from a flea market for $70 I own seven fenders stra t. jagua r.tele .mustang. Dobro and two acoustics the SG JUMPED to the head of the pack!!! the hot pickups or the great neck or the kill switch this is my go-to fo all great rock and roll !!! I LOVE my Epiphone SG any amp and ive got big balls ! lol great vid by the way thank you!
