Short remarks by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and the President of the Republic of Korea, Yoon Suk Yeol, at the NATO Summit in Vilnius, 11 July 2023.
Secretary General welcomes NATO’s deepening partnership with South Korea
Saying that Russia’s war in Ukraine shows how security is not regional but global, Mr Stoltenberg commended South Korea for its support to Ukraine. He also expressed concern about North Korea’s provocative behavior, including nuclear activity and ballistic missile tests which violate multiple UN Security Council resolutions.
The Secretary General welcomed NATO’s deepening partnership with Seoul, including the new partnership programme between the Alliance and South Korea. This programme will further strengthen cooperation including on cyber defence, counter-terrorism, arms control, and new technologies. South Korea opened a diplomatic mission to NATO last November.
🗣 | NATO Secretary General:
Mr. President, Mr Yoon, welcome.
Thank you so much for coming here and for attending the NATO Summit.
Korea is very highly valued partner of NATO. And I appreciate very much the visit I made to your country some months ago earlier this year.
We value the partnership with you because security is not regional, security is global.
What happens in the Indo-Pacific matters for Europe, and what happens in Europe matters for the Indo-Pacific.
The war in Ukraine has global ramifications.
And I thank you for your strong position, condemning the illegal invasion of Ukraine.
We are also very concerned about the nuclear and missile programs of North Korea.
This affects all NATO Allies, and just underlines the importance of all those who believe in the rules based order to stand together.
And to stand up for the rules-based international order.
I also welcome the fact that we have now finalized our programme for further partnership - the Tailored Partnership Programme.
That just highlights further how we are able to develop our partnerships.
