Officials suggest U.S. President Joe Biden will be "very direct" on raising concerns about China's behavior when he holds his virtual summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The summit is due to start shortly.
A senior U.S. official, who asked not to be named, told reporters Monday that President Biden will say that as a responsible nation, China should "play by the rules of the road."
The official added that Biden will make clear the need to "build common guardrails to avoid miscalculations."
The official also said it's important to keep channels of communication open, but "it's not a meeting where Washington expects deliverables."
