That sucks, left Medellin that scams small and got reminded here at home in america the scams are on larger more elaborate scale . Sorry to hear this

Sorry you went thru that. I know how stressful something like that can be. I hope your bank can get your money back, if not than they should be able to trace it to the scammer if they deposit it. Also please, please file, press charges against this person when they get them. Teach them a lesson. God only knows how many other they have scammed.

Am in NYC as well and when I was searching that was my biggest fear. I got so many scams, and refused to send any money unless I was able to come and see the apartment that way I could have knocked on other tenants doors to see if this is legit. I found my place on a app street easy.

Wishing you luck and please keep us updated.👍🏾

Oh dayum. As a native New Yorker, even I don’t understand how people survive in NYC

Whenever you pay, always use your credit card my guy… you can always do a dispute or a chargeback, that should rectify the issue no questions asked.. if they took it straight outta ya bank account it’s much harder to get ya bread back

I'm sorry this happened to you. I hope you are able to get justice. I'm originally from NY but am in Colombia now. Don't trust anyone!
The same mentality you had in Medellín, use it here!

Survives the wilds of Colombia, returns to the states, gets crushed. Hmmm. There’s a lesson here.

We're only young once (luckily!) All of us have learned things the hard way! Your lesson was admittedly pretty extreme (NYC is definitely the big leagues!) Caution is the best operating procedure. Not everyone has our best interests at heart!

Did you get your money back? The same thing happened to me while moving to LA and they ended up catching the scammer at their bank and sending back the money to all victims. A hard lesson to learn.

Sorry this happened, but pretty foolish to agree to an apartment you've never seen, especially over FB messenger when you haven't seen the person's credentials.
Also the law in NYC is they can't charge you more than one month's rent after the security deposit.

Yeesh. Yeah it's brutal out there. I got lucky and went in on a new lease in Queens a few months ago. Otherwise there's just... nothing. Not even if you overpay. Lots of scams, and some crazies out there.

As a rule, I won't sign anything unless I see the place in person and read the whole lease. It's too much money to be nonchalant about it. NYC is going to be a strong character in your life, and it will definitely roll you if you don't take that into account. There's all kinds of shady and weird stuff here that you don't see in other parts of the country (my pet peeve is cash-only businesses), and you just have to expect the unexpected.

Also I have some NYC content you might be interested in, although most of my videos are going to be stylized travel vlogs/memoirs. Sub if you're interested!

Brokers have to be licensed, and it’s pretty easy to find out if the person that you’re working with is a legit broker. I definitely wouldn’t rent sight-unseen, but the worst that you’d be dealing with if you had a legit broker are apartments that are smaller than they look in the pictures and/or noise that you can’t hear in still photos. Did this fake broker pretend to work for a legitimate brokerage? Were they sending emails through an email address with the domain of a legit brokerage?
