Tomato flu outbreak has been reported in various parts of the country. Tomato flu is a rare viral disease caused by the pathogen Coxsackievirus 16 (CA16) which is an enterovirus. It is a highly contagious disease and can be understood as a variant of the hand, foot and mouth disease. Why is it called the tomato flu? Because upon getting infected, reddish round painful blisters appear on several body parts that look like tomatoes. It affects mainly children under the age of ten but can occur in adults too. No antiviral drugs or vaccines are available for its treatment or prevention. We rely upon supportive therapy and symptomatic treatments for now. Symptoms include fever, red-coloured rashes, skin irritation, dehydration, etc. Upon getting infected, proper hydration, sufficient rest and appropriate hygiene help in healing.

* Skin rashes, reddish blisters
* Body ache, Fatigue
* Sore throat
* Diarrhea, Dehydration
* Poor appetite
* Sores on tongue, gums and inside of cheeks
* Joint swelling
* Nausea, vomiting

Recommendations:
* Avoid scratching the blisters
* Maintain cleanliness and hygiene
* Isolate for a week from the onset of symptom to prevent infection from spreading to others
* Refrain from immediate contact with the infected person
* Keep the patient hydrated
* Take nutrition rich balanced diet to boost immunity
